Icelander said: I only smoke a couple of times a year. If you have self control you can keep it in the freezer instead of throwing it away.
Obviously I don't have that self control... yet. I've used it habitually for years, with a few breaks, since I was a teenager. I have been unable to keep it on hand without finding a reason to smoke it on any given evening. I lie to myself about what is justifiable use. I try to squeeze in a session between arriving home from work and my evening errands. I wake and bake on Saturday mornings before accomplishing anything, because hey, I've got all day, right? Sometimes the only reason I smoke is to alleviate the indecision of whether or not to smoke, if that makes sense.
My behavior is compulsive and destructive; moderation is not going to work at this point in time.
I smoke to justify my laziness and my shyness, my inaction and my low standards for myself. I don't have to feel the pressure of living up to my potential if I am already limiting my capabilities with a drug habit.
The act of throwing it away also serves a symbolic purpose. It was a physical action that represented taking a stand against certain negative behaviors of mine. It felt good.
This time I actually put a timeframe on my break. I have an achievable, definite goal. Once the initial period is up, I'll be in a good place to decide what comes next.
As well, I need to prove to myself that life is perfectly okay without chemical enhancement, and as much as I believe that, I have never quite lived that philosophy since I started using cannabis.
39 days remain.
If all this is true I suggest that you remain off pot for at least a year. I think just a month or two is a temporary fix and you will go back once the pressure of life gets to you.

That's probably what I'll end up doing. I need a short term goal first.

Hey man, how's it going? I made the exact same decision for the exact same reasons as you. My last day of smoking was the 20th of October. I set a goal for myself to not smoke until the 21st of November (when all my friends come home from college for Thanksgiving). It's been relatively easy for the most part, besides having trouble getting to sleep at night. That was fixed once the clocks went back an hour though. Hope everything has been going well for you.

Is it just me, or a lot of people giving up on weed?
I don't know, but I'm suspicious about some talk that this killer indica is really not so great. Apparently it's lucrative nature is more pleasing to commercial growers. I want to buy a quarter of pure sativa and see how that helps. I wonder if I've ever smoked pure sativa, or close.

I think I understand how you feel. But just make sure you're not associating the drug itself with your own behaviour. If you're going to throw physical things away, do it with cultural items or things truly associated with negative behaviours.
May your time of abstinence serve you well.

It has been going well. I am never going back to my old routines. It's just too good without it. I love having tons of time in the evenings to do whatever I want. I've been reading, exercising, tackling stuff I've been putting off. I feel great and in control.
I have never had trouble sleeping, with or without weed.
However, I have made the conscious decision to smoke on three occasions since. Only with my friends, and only when I carefully considered what the consequences will be on the rest of my day. I stay present during the experience, and don't re-dose when it wears off. It has not made me tempted to buy any and I now have zero desire to be stoned by myself.
However, I am still aware that a relapse is only a dimebag away, so I have to remain vigilant whenever anybody asks me if I want to buy any. It has become such a habit to just say "yes!" when asked this question. When I drink alcohol, I let my guard down sometimes, so I've taken to drinking less too.
That has been the hardest part. Drinking without smoking. I like (and have become accustomed to) the calming effect marijuana has on my drunken mind, and it is also easier to forget one's convictions when one is juiced. This has resulted in my questioning my drinking habits too, and that behavior seems to be on its way out. The questions of when and why I should drink have become my new conundrum.
The future looks bright
Glad you're doing well fruitboot

I'm a little dependent on MJ myself. I find myself smoking it about 4 times a day on average if I have to work, and 6-7 times a day, a total of about a 0.7-1.2 grams a day about. :o

Right on, man. Glad to hear you're keeping strong; it can be pretty hard sometimes. Myself, I am in the beginning of a break from marijuana (among other things). I recall on a past break of a little more than a month that my mood seemed to be improved significantly and it seemed easier to open up to people. I also remember the night that I ended my break. An all too familiar and unwelcome paranoia washed over my outlook mere minutes after that unusually harsh smoke was exhaled from my lungs.
You mentioned that you are reading more now that you've cut back on marijuana. In which way? That you were too stoned to even think about picking up a book or that marijuana had a negative effect on your reading comprehension and/or memory?

That's one of my main problems, everything I get for the most part around where I live is indica, and all it does is make me sleepy and unmotivated. A couple of times I have gotten a hold of some sativa, and boy was it a refreshing difference. I was up and ready to do shit! My mood was glorious and after the effects wore off the last thing that was on my mind was taking a nap.

I know this isn't directed towards me, but I felt to answer anyway. When I get stoned and try to read one of two things happen; I have to reread something over and over again, or I will read 3 pages and realize I didn't take any of it in. I oftentimes forget what I read about when I try to rethink it the next day. This isn't any good for me, especially considering I mostly read books that give you must to think about.

I can't read when I'm stoned or tired... and I was always one or the other or both. I start daydreaming or pondering something in the book... it just doesn't work.

Thats cool and all, it just sounds like you have a problem with getting rid of your shit, like the packs of ciggrettes and FLUSHING WEED down the toilet. Am I the only one that sees something wrong with that? But yes getting on-top of you habits is always a good thing. My favorite habits to break are the thinking ones.

Heh, I know what thats like.. not taking anything in.
Pisses me off too.. some people say that it actually helps them read better. Probably has a lot to do, if not all, with not losing your awareness of the moment.

I think you're right about that... cannabis tends to narrow one's focus, which can help you absorb yourself in something if you can manage not to get absorbed in something else by accident
