Smoking too much...
    #1778985 - 08/04/03 07:12 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I was a daily smoker when I was with my girlfriend. I'd smoke a joint at the end of the day, walking on empty dark streets. I enjoyed it. It relaxed me and it was a reward I'd allow myself to.

But when I broke up with my girlfriend, I was only slowly able to get used to single life again... feeling completly free to do anything now that I was single, I started smoking weed often... usually over five times a day even when I stayed home. When I went out it was more.

I've gotten too used to being stoned. When I'm stoned, I don't think "I'm stoned" and it's not exciting anymore. When I'm sober though, I think "I'm sober" and see this as a problem that I have to fix by smoking a bong hit or two.

I thought that I could be active when I smoked, at first. But I'm not so sure anymore. Looking back on the past month, I haven't done much more than sit on my ass stoned at the computer... I go out, but going out is usually sitting down with my friends smoking and talking.

I could never go out with my friends sober when I was with my girlfriend, but now, I can't mow the lawn or take a shower without smoking weed.

I don't want to become a vegetable. I want my motivation back. But I love getting stoned. I love how the day slips by when I'm stoned.

It's starting not to be as fun anymore. I get pretty much nothing out of being stoned, apart from appeasing the desire to light up.

When I smoke, I like the first half hour of it or so, especially at the start of the day. Why? Because it's a change in consciousness, and it's entertaining. But then, I end up regretting smoking because I can't do anything, not even the things I like that require concentration (i.e. programming). So then, since I'm all dumbed down already and it's too late, I figure that it would be a good idea to smoke a bowl, and the process repeats.

I have a procrastination problem. I don't blame it on pot, but on my lifestyle, which includes smoking many times a day since the beginning of the summer. The longest break I spent without weed is five days (when I got my wisdom teeth pulled out), and I proceeded to start smoking like a madman again afterwards.

What should I do? I don't want to quit entirely, because I know pot can have a positive impact on someone's life, if used properly. I experienced this positive impact until I started smoking more than once a day.

I figure I should start by only smoking once a day at first, maybe twice if I go out, but not more. And gradually I'll cut down until I'm smoking reasonable amounts. If this fails, I guess I'll be going cold-turkey.

Advice? Experiences? This habit is sucking the life out of me...

You know what to do.Quit. Its that simple.

From my experience, cutting down doesnt work either. I used to smoke everyday, and every time I told myself I would start cutting down, it would never work out.

Just quit.

Thank you to both for your advice, especially Xibalba.

You're right. Getting off my ass will help me quit. I will probably start growing mushrooms next week, and I'm very excited about getting into the hobby. It's not weed that causes my lack of productivity, it's my lack of productivity that makes me want to smoke.

I'm going camping tomorrow, and I hope the fresh air will put some life back into me. I will not smoke more than once a day for the next week, this should already cause a drastic change. I won't stop there though, and I'll try and smoke as little as possible (not at all, even) on weekdays as you have suggested.

I also might've found a job which will keep me busy for most of the time.

It's time to take the trash out!

Hey, If there is someone you live with who you trust (preferably who doesn't smoke) some people find it helpful to get someone to give you self imposed rations then hide the rest while you are trying to cut down - if you have trouble having left overs.

I would say only smoke on the weekends but I have been trying to do this myself for a long time with no success...

But I like the mafia's "5 o'clock rule"

I don't see anything wrong with smoking in the evening after a whole day of productive activity, or all day on your day off.

I also highly reccomend a yearly "purge"- I usually do a month or six weeks once a year.

Also, take some 5htp and SAME, and a decent multivitamin.

Thats great advice Xibala I personaly have the same problem. I can't quit weed. I am currently risking my freedom because I am on probation for DUI with random drug screenings. The thing is I can't go 6 months with out smoking weed and I can't seem to cut back. So I will probably just quit like 7 days before my first PO meeting and try to dilute by drinking tons of water the day of test and also bring in a substitution sample of proper temperature also to use if I feel safe doing so preferably this method would be used in the future also if succesfull the first time. If I can't for some reason(observation) use substition then I will piss my dilluted sample and hopefully make it under cut off. I wont smoke again if I do piss untill im in the clear. Then if I fail hopefully I can just admit to smoking like a month ago and he will let me retest in another week or so and I will pass. Anyway for me weed is harder to quit and more addicting than TV, Video Games, maybe not porn they are tied but crack? I have tried that shit and let me tell you it is nothing to write home about. I think im my own experience and personal preference I am much more prone to be addicted to pot.

A liver cleansing herbal daily supplement will greatly reduce the amoount of time it takes to pass a drug UA. I am a daily smoker. I can pass with a carbo cleanser in three days and I weigh over 200 lbs. I take Constant Cleanse, echinacea/golden seal, lechithin, chitosan (especially in the evenings when you smoke the most--it absorbs the THC metabolites released by the liver which begins within minutes of smoking), milk thistle,cranberry/dandelion root 3X daily. You should also drink one ounce of water/fluid per two lbs of body weight. Allow at least 72 hours if a heavy smoker, then use a Carbo cleanser such as Ready Clean the day of the test. Always test in the afternoon if possible and try to drink a good bit of water in the morning prior. I've been defeating UA's using this method for years.

I would like to believe that but from what I hear from most people is don't risk it on the drink especially if you are a heavy smoker that is why I would lean more towards substitution. But I fear I might be observed so I think I will be take the drink and golden seal and other supplements also this time and bring a clean sample of proper temperature with me incase I am unobserved that would be the better choice clearly.

Meph, i know exactly what your describing.  I've smoked weed multiple times a day for years now and at first it was as you describe.  Some people are just like that, but i found after awhile it didn't effect me as much.  Stone wise, as well as being burnt out, having the munchies etc...
See its not a problem, you just need to get used to it.  Smoke more, and make yourself do stuff.  If you want to get high smoke more!  Then you can always be buzzed, still get high, and not be a disasociated lump playing video games on the couch...although that is one of my favorite pastimes.
I don't smoke at work.  But ill get high in the morning an hour or two before i start work.  Its a little tougher working burnt out, but the day goes by quite fast.
Basically some people can smoke everyday all day, and they can keep thier motivation, or most of it, some (like my friend) end up falling asleep after eating a tub of my icecream!
Whatever you choose, good luck.

From a concerned stoner. :stoned:

when this happened to me... i knew there was a problem, and i quit. to me, it was absolutely awful living life and always looking forward to getting high. if you are at that point, its time to quit. thats what i did. i haven't smoked for 4 months, and before i actually quit, i had my doubts... and went through the same thinking ... "but marijuana was positive for me, should i really stop?"

yes, marijuana can have a positive influence on life, but you know the saying... "when you get the message, put the phone down."

yea, Im a student, so I like to limit my smoking to the weekends, except now that its been summer, but during the year, last year anyhow, I started smoking during the week, my grades plummeted, so i completely stopped for 3 months, cold turkey just like that. So its not that hard, fora week or two after I stopped all i thought about was how nice it would be to get high, but thats the psychological addiction for ya...but it can be done, and its not hard either, so if your just lookin to cut down to once or twice a day, fear not, its very do able, and be sure to preoccupy yourself with other things (I too program, I make websites for money). Once the weed isnt a creative tool anymore, thats when you're doing too much, too often..
Good Luck! Once you lay off, smoking will have more satisfaction, so theres something to look forward to!

I completely agree with the purge idea. Because of my legal trouble I wasn't exactly permitted to leave my house, so I was sober for 2 months (damn long time when you're used to smoking a quarter a week) so anyways I used to have a pretty high tolerance, a blunt would get me pretty stoned, but a bowl would do little 2 would get me feeling great. First time I hit a pipe (a nice bubbler) after my 2 month sobriety period I got immediately fuched up, three bowls later I was soaring. Also taking a multivitamin is good advice, it keeps you from getting headaches when you're high.

i smoke everyday now also but i just recently (3 months?) started that again. about a year ago i was smoking everyday and it just got boring i didnt get high, just relaxed....and i was like fuck this. so i quit..it was hard only the first 2 or 3 days then i just felt better afterwards.
you forget what it feels like after a while, not to high all day. it feels good..i only quit for 2 1/2 weeks and then i smoked about once a week and actually got stoned..you should try that...if you decide you want to quit but dont want to give it up...do what i did and try it out for a couple weeks knowing u can always go back.

u might not even want to smoke everyday after that, i didnt.

Its different also if your paying lots of $$$ for it.  I smoke my fill now, but for awhile i was not working and spending like $40 a week...not much, but if your supposed to be looking for a job it cramps your motivation, so i cut down for awhile.  But now im working and have lots around.  I don't crave it now...i used to, but after awhile of as much as you want you don't need it, and i feel i could quit if i had to pay, or if i went on a trip, or just felt like it.  I stilll get stoned, but it doesn't mess me up. I love the taste, the texture, ...i smoke it cus i love it!

i have a serious problem with marijauana

for example...i smoke everyday at least once....today i smoked some weed, felt sorta high for 30 minutes, then sober again....about an hour or 2 later i smoked a blunt with some stoner friends, and was sober again in an hour.....its a reasonable amount of time since i last smoked....im sober, tired, but i want to smoke again....i want to be high but that shit dont even last anymore!!!!!

i need to stop smoking marijuana....but everytime im sober i want to get high....and its not even high anymore...just a fucking stoned, relaxed feeling

Well i don't get really stoned anymore....unless i scrape my budbuster or get some good hash....or when i get a new batch, the different types will get you stoned.  For example if i smoke purple pine for 3 weeks after the first couple days all i get is that stoned relaxed feeling, then if i got white widow, id be more stoned for the first few days then tolerance builds up.  But i always get the stoned relaxed feeling, and it stays for hours after i smoke a joint, but i usually have another before it wears off...

Now you might be thinking 'what a pot fiend' but really my gf and i only smoke around 3-5 joints a day between the two of us, which doesn't seem like that much to me.  Mabye i am a fiend, but i love it and will keep smoking till i no longer feel this way. :stoned:
