there should be a temperature guage. a dial of sorts. if so, set it to about 95 or 100.
if not, it probably runs at about 140-150, which is a bit too hot. get a Nesco American Harvest Snackmaster.

Don't use that use air dry then use dryrite or dryaid. Heat turns the mushrooms black and degrades the potency.

The preceding quote has brought to you by... Misinformation & Perpetuated Myths.
Seriously though, heat does not degrade potency, else cooking with shrooms would not be effective.

Well I took out the heating coil but I also took out the other smaller coil which turned out to be a vital wire I needed to make the fan run. On the 3rd try to disable the heat, I fucked some shit up and had to reset the house circuit breakers. Threw it away but at least I got the trays.
I'd rather break a 40$ dehydrator than risk potency loss. The racks sit perfectly on my 2x2x5" box fan and even on the highest setting the funguys stay put. It also helps that the average R/H here is 1-20% year-round .
To anyone about to buy a dehydrator: Might as well buy a loud box fan and some dehydrator trays, or make your own with wire mesh.
Whether heat degrades potency or not, I'd rather not risk it. I learned early on in this hobby that patience plays a crucial role in success. I'd rather wait longer and just fan dry to be sure. After 1 day of fan drying the weight went from 366g (fresh) to 41g (day later). The stalky big ones take forever lol.

fan drying will never get them cracker dry like a dehydrator will.
your paranoia about dehydrators is just that, paranoia.

you will NOT be hurting the psilocybin in a dehydrator. The temp never reaches higher than 70 degrees Celsius (160 F) which is fine. LSD which is MUCH less stable can handle up to 80 degrees Celsius.

me if you have questions about lasers Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles. FeelFamily resident tech guru

either way I completely destroyed my dehydrator by trying to take out the heat coil. I have heard fan drying can get them cracker-dry from others on the forums, it just takes up to 48 hours. Someone said they got cracker dry where theyre R/H is above 80% most of the time so I'm pretty confident I don't need heat to dry them, and heat destroying potency is just 1 less thing to worry about going wrong.
I'm quite a newb at this and am just playing it safe, im more paranoid about cobweb mold than drying fruits right now.
I'm going to check to see if they're dry yet, its lookin damn close.
