Experience vs. Interpretation

This is so basic, but we must cover it again and again, never moving past first grade. It always goes, "You can't deny my experience!" as an argument for some seemingly paranormal occurence.


Actual Experience: I saw a fast-moving light in the sky.

Skeptic Interpretation: I saw a fast-moving light in the sky.

Believer Interpretation: HOLY SHIT! I just saw an alien spacecraft!


Actual Experience: My girlfriend and I had the same thought at the same time.

Skeptic Interpretation: My girlfriend and I had the same thought at the same time.

Believer Interpretation: HOLY SHIT! I just had a telepathic experience and no one can say otherwise.


Actual Experience: While walking in an old abandoned house on a hill, I heard a creek and then got a chill.

Skeptic Interpretation: While walking in an old abandoned house on a hill, I heard a creek and then got a chill.

Believer Interpretation: HOLY SHIT! I just encountered a ghost!

First off you have the Actual Experience wrong. It should read more like this:

Actual Experience: I met a being who claimed to be from another world.

or

Actual Experience: I met a being who seemed so different, that I assumed he must be from another world.


Nice comingling though, but it don't fly to put an interpretation as part of the experience.

I agree with AA, it does work both ways.

No one has an unmitigated, unfiltered view of reality. Both jumped to a conclusion based on the delusion that they were really experiencing unmitigated reality.

no, seriously.... screw solipsism. The main problem i see with your thesis on this matter is the same one used by athiests to villanize organized religion.
By using the most extreme sector of the population/group that you are attacking, you apply their ignorance and/or faults to the entire spectrum.
Yes, there are people out there who think they have special powers because a street light turned off when they looked at it.... sure there are televangelists who believe that satan buried dinosaur bones to fool man and that the grand canyon was formed in a few months.
it is easy to build your thesis on these people, because they are so extreme... then label them as delusional and label your side, by contrast, as the logical and reasonable one.

Maybe for those who build there persona on being a skeptic. I try an take each case separately.
