Consumer Alert: 12 out of 14 Air Fresheners are Toxic
    #7457548 - 09/26/07 08:48 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

http://www.newstarget.com/022067.html

Quote:

A test of air freshener products recently conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council found that 12 out of 14 popular air freshener products contained a chemical known to be harmful to the health of humans. Phthalates, known to cause reproductive problems and hormone disruption in humans, were found in virtually all air freshener brands, including several Walgreens-branded air fresheners that the popular retailer has now pulled off its shelves.

Neither the FDA nor the EPA conducts any safety testing or spot checking of toxic chemicals in air freshener products. Essentially, consumers could be exposed to any number of toxic airborne chemicals from air freshener products, with no warning whatsoever. The safety of chemicals used in these products is utterly ignored by the FDA in much the same way that perfumes and cosmetic products containing cancer-causing chemicals are routinely ignored by the agency. The FDA makes virtually no effort to protect American consumers from cancer-causing or hormone-disrupting chemicals in tens of thousands of consumer products, and were it not for the efforts of consumer advocacy groups and environmental protection groups like the NRDC, no one would be protecting consumers at all. (U.S. government agencies usually have to be sued by groups like the CSPI or Public Citizen before they will take any pro-consumer action...)

original press release (Sept 19, 2007):

http://www.nrdc.org/media/2007/070919.asp

Quote:

NRDC tested 14 different brands of common household air fresheners and found that 12 contained the hormone-disrupting chemicals known as phthalates. Only two, Febreze Air Effects and Renuzit Subtle Effects, contained no detectable levels of phthalates. The products that tested positive included ones marketed as “all-natural” and “unscented.” None had phthalates in the list of ingredients or anywhere else on the label. The three with the highest level of phthalates were Walgreens Air Freshener, Walgreens Scented Bouquet, and Ozium Glycolized Air Sanitizer.

Well of course Ozium is toxic...

I'm sure we expose ourselves to worse things and its not as though we walk around breathing air sanitizer constantly.

The Ozium will remain in my car door.

it is no surprise that the FDA again defies its proclaimed purpose..

these days we can no longer trust government to protect us from harm, especially in matters of health. we need to take the responsibility ourselves and look out for each other.

thanks for the post, kotik.

Good post!

That explains why that chemical-smelling shit gives me a mad headache.

I'm sure on some level that most bleaches, mold killers, perfumes, and other chemical-laden products are harmful. We weren't made to breathe such vial things...they just CAN'T be safe! And people wonder why the rates of cancer, birth defects, and other illnesses are so high, (although most just think cancer is some magical disease that strikes without reason).

It's time we wake up and realize that most of the drugs, food additives, and chemicals approved by the FDA have NOT been studied for long term or synergistic effects on humans and likely cause cumulative effects over time. Agent Orange was used in the U.S. as a common pesticide for years before they stopped its use here (and decided to use it in Vietnam), dioxin is one of the most highly carcinogenic substances known to man, and artificial sweeteners like saccharin and aspartame are KNOWN carcinogens and are suspected in the chronic illnesses of many people. Vioxx, Fen-Phen, Thalidomide, the additive Thimerosal in vaccines (52% mercury, the most toxic heavy metal), and others are approved for use either with the knowledge of their harmful potential or without conducting appropriate studies before approval. Either way, it's wrong. Dead wrong.

People often defend their right to expose themselves to these "acceptable risks" and brush it off as needless fear mongering, but what about your children? They don't have a choice whether you use poisons in your home or serve them up on a dinner plate or in a lunch box. And for those without kids but who plan to have them some day, YOU DON'T KNOW THAT THESE PRODUCTS DON'T DAMAGE YOUR DNA AND CAN'T CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR AN UNBORN CHILD. So stop being selfish and think of it as a future investment in your own genetic line. Darwinism has a way of weeding out the morons in a society.

Doesn't ozium tell you to leave the room for like 4 days or something after using it? Of course that shit is lethal, if you enter the room right after using it, you basically die for 45 minutes.
