Sex Surveys for 11 year olds?
    #4301584 - 06/16/05 12:03 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

This article with a poll came in my e-mail just now from some American Family Asscociation.
Quote:

School Refuses To Allow Parent To See Explicit Sex-Ed Material

Should parents approve sex-ed material?  Take our poll.

Dear Cindy,

Parents in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, are upset because the local school administered an explicit sex survey to sixth-graders.  The survey solicits answers to such questions as "How old were you when you had sexual intercourse for the first time?" and "The last time you had sexual intercourse, did you or your partner use a condom?"

The school committee would not allow parents to view copies of the survey because they felt parents would "misinterpret" the questions.  Parent David Fisher said, "In the 6th grade ? these are children 11 or 12 years old ? they are being asked if they have ever engaged in oral sex, when was the first time that they engaged in oral sex, with how many different people have they engaged in oral sex?  And they use the same questions about sexual intercourse, and whether or not they've used a condom."

A similar sex survey being administered to eighth-graders asks students to identify themselves as heterosexual, gay or lesbian, or bisexual.

Should this kind of material be taught in public schools without the permission of parents?

Click here to take our poll

The results of this poll will be available for parents to present to their local school administrators who are, or may be, considering sex-ed classes in their school.

Incidentally, you might want to see what kind of sex-ed material your children are being taught in their school.

Sincerely,

Don

Donald E. Wildmon, Founder and Chairman
American Family Association

P.S. Please forward this e-mail message to your family and friends.

Is this ridiculous or is it me. I have opinions about everything, usually many varied ones to boot, some even contradictory.

This leaves me dumbfounded. Should we be surveying Americas 11 year olds asking them how old they were the first time they had sexual intercourse? I would've been sitting there in my 6th grade class thinking "Is this something I was suppose to be doing already?"

WOW! Sex life surveys in the 6th grade. Times are a changin. Can you imagine how horny those kids must've been after class that day? They were probably thinking, "Damn, I have some catching up to do. Orgy at Joe's house! He's a latch key kid and his parents won't be home till 6."

In 6th grade, I was still punching boys, not sucking them off. We had sex ed but we never covered oral sex with condemns in it. That was before aids.

My daughters 8 and her and her 9 and 10 year old friends are still wanting "dolls" to play with for their Birthdays not dicks. What's going on?

I'm a crisis intervention/substance abuse specialist in an 'A' rated Miami middle school. In the spring I talk to classes at the science teachers' requests. I speak differently to 8th graders going off to the high school than to 6th graders. This year, during my routine 'prevention' component, when discussing decision making and contrasting opposites like honesty-dishonesty, citizen-criminal, kind-cruel, etc., one 6th grader asked "Can someone be honest AND cruel?" I answered that there are people who deliver honest services to people who ask to be treated cruelly. What I had in mind I did not plan on elaborating on, but a 6th grade boy perked up, shot up his hand and blurted out: "I know - a dominatrix!" It is difficult to surprise me now but this did.

The last day of school I was hailed by a returning female student who left for her 7th grade year. She was 11 through the end of her 6th grade year, and told kids she was 15 (and could pass). I saw letters detailing her lesbian sexual and emotional involvement with a older 8th grade multiple retainee lesbian.

I have to talk to 6th graders about 'normal' sex with someone who loves you and cares for you and would never hurt you by lying about being a virgin, (which means STD-free in their minds), but then 'rip-n-dip.' Yes, some 6th graders give and get oral sex, blow-jobs. Fewer have intercourse but it happens - one with an older girl cousin. I have to contrast normal sex with what I call "street sex" as detailed in the hiphop music videos, the attitude of a low-life like 'Fitty Cent' and others. They know exactly what I'm saying. My Lady taught for 2 and 1/2 months at my school and quit. You wouldn't believe what some of her kids would say about her body or what their desires were. I had a 6th grade psychiatrically diagnosed, chubby Cuban 6th grader 4 years ago comment about a friend of ours who taught him in my last school (a bright, Black one-time stripper and poet turned English teacher with some golds, age 25 at the time): "She's got a kickin' bod, but she's gotta fix that grill."

It ain't right g., but it's real. I think it has something to do with the milk.

WoW, school has changed a helluva~ lot since I was in high school, as it relates to sex and sex-education....  I didn't live in a real big city growing up, but I don't remember real sex being a major "topic" of discussion/thoughts till at least 14ish....    Hell, I was still playing "Yar's Revenge" on my Atari 2600 I bought from de-tasseling corn over the summer....!

I couldn't imagine observing nor being in a school in the today....

Does it even matter now days if it is a school in a big city vs. a smaller city,
or is all of the observed sexual knowledge due to stuff on TV and such....?

Before you know it, Elementary Schools will start having "Conjugal Recesses"....(?)

The milk huh? I was going to question the water? I realize "some" are active at that age. I didn't know how I felt about 11 year olds being asked those questions. They wern't even being taught anything with them, just asked to answer them.

I just got off the phone with hubby and asked him about it. We are not prudes by any means, but he said it would piss him off to know some stranger was asking her those questions at that age through a survey without his review and consent. Something about it doesn't sit right with me either.

Markos, do you think for an 11 year old who is still interested in playng with dolls, though they may know how babies are made, could be psychologically harmed by those questions at age 11?

My grade school went up to 6th. Jr High was 7th and 8th. In Jr, high, pregnacy and STDs were not uncommon among my peers. Back in elementary school, we hadn't even advanaced to spin the bottle or peck kissing. Maybe where middle school begins at 6th grade, it's looked on differently because they are miggling with and under the influence of 13 and 14 year olds.

Do you think that the parents have a right to review the survey first and that their permission for their child to take it is warrented. Do you think it is right for the school to be this invasive without parental review and consent?

What if some perv is just getting off on these surveys?

Well, I think I have an opinion forming now and its that I would want to first be able to review it and have my consent required for her to take it.

If any of you have younger children or plan to, what do you think? I'd like to hear your thoughts and feelings on it. I'll take their poll tomorrow.

Such a survey is inappropriate in the extreme.

Now we have 10 year olds sucking "balls", "tag" teaming sex orgies and child "swingers".

I hoped to hear from at least one other parent. That e-mail caught me off guard with something I never was faced to consider. Thanks for the reply.

If anyone would be comfortable with their 11 year old being given that survey without your review or consent, I would like to hear why.

Ya~ know, maybe something that **COULD** make a difference in the influence of younger aged sex/sex-ed, would be like the way the school systems were set up in the "smaller" city I grew up in....  There was a "middle school" for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades - giving a three year transition between elementary and high school....  I dunno~ if this would make a difference if evaluated in the today vs. back when I went to school or not....?

Amazing to think about my parents saying to me, "Back when I was your age things were not like (insert stuff here)...."

I have never seen any such thing as a parent or at the school where I work. That "survey" strikes me as unrealistic and suspect. I would question it seriously with school officials.

Some others thought the same thing and looked for support to go to the school administration with. I'm glad to have been made aware of this in case my daughter goes back to public schools.

You guys can take the poll from this link as well if you want.

Indeed it is. Can't we just let children be children? Though there may be some who are precocious in the pre-teen years, this is by no means universal. My eleven year old expresses great disgust at any mention of sex or sexual attractiveness. Now before anyone jumps to any unqualified conclusions - my wife and I are not prudes nor Christians, I am a confirmed agnostic who would lay odds in favor of atheism over Christianity, she believes in no religion and in fact was raised without any religion at all. This episode just reinforces my objections to the public school system.

So? I was interested in sex earlier than that, I had my first ejaculation at eleven years of age. It is not the purpose of schools to conduct sex surveys of eleven and twelve year olds. While administrators of public schools allow shit like this to go down, they neglect reading, writing, mathematics, hard sciences, history and civics. Today was the last day of school for my children, my niece (who is in the same grade as my son) received FOUR F's and ONE C-, yet the totally incompetent 'educators' have chosen to pass her to sixth grade. I believe that those running our public schools in this country have their priorities where their heads are planted.

I have a nephew who was encouraged to see the opposite sex in a sexual way by his father when he was 6. At age 8 he was catcalling women and saying crude sexual things to women in public. After her divorce my sister in law had to break this behavior pattern. 12 is not an unreasonable age for interest in the opposite sex as long as they are taught to express themselves in a healthy (and polite) manner.

It comes at different times for different people. The one size fits all mentality of our current public school system does a disservice to those it is supposed to be serving, the children who have been entrusted to it for the purpose of EDUCATION. Schools need to be concentrating on the development the higher mental faculties which set humans apart from the beasts of the wilderness, not sex surveys.

"Why do I get the feeling you are giving me a lecture Hue?"

It is self generated. I admit to being bossy...maybe your just sensing that... Never read more into my words than what I say. I am all on the surface. Many people in my life make the mistake of thinking I have hidden depths when in reality I am all surface. My words mean only what the collective definitions convey. I certainly did not try to imply that your partners son is a little pervert.

"Interest in sex comes when it comes."

This is true unless it is brought on by unnatural interference...like in the earlier mentioned case.
