Eating for spiritual growth.

I am doing some dietary experiments with raw foods and vegan diet. I hear it can help on the spiritual path. I definitely feel more energy, but I wonder about it taking me to new awareness. Anyone got some solid experiences to share?

I don't, but I am thinking about taking the same approach.

Lately I've just been stuffing my face with whatever's around.

I have been on a cleansing diet for 7 months now. I have lost 30 lbs, without trying. I get up and run up the mountains almost every day. I definitely have more energy. But I can't tell if I'm more spiritual or even a nicer guy.:lol: Maybe nothing can correct the evil spirits in me.

:lol: Yeah, I was wondering about that. Maybe I just haven't given it enough time. They say it takes about two years to replace 98% if your cells.

That means I still have almost 17 months of nasty in me.:hellfire:

I am re-stocking on groceries right now and it's mostly vegan, though I did buy some milk and cheese.  I honestly have a ton of trouble staying conscious enough to keep myself from indulging in unhealthy food, especially chocolate.

I did too until I got really sick and was forced into it. Now I'm getting very hooked on how I feel. It's still a struggle at times but I'm pretty committed to it right now and for the last 7 months or so.

Well that gives me courage that I'll be able to chance my habits. :smile:

I tend to go in cycles.  I just moved away from home for college.  I started off really well, I was doing yoga, playing basketball till I was exhausted every day, eating frequently but light and healthy foods.

Then all of a sudden I just kind of snapped back like a rubber band.

So the process begins anew, and hopefully I will grow more this time and become better at controlling my urges.  Because really, I hate the feeling of not being able to be satisfied until the next meal.  It's such a dishonest feeling, like I can tell I'm pulling one over on myself but don't feel the self-control (or don't want to feel the self-control) to stop.

That seems kind of contradictory.  How can you surrender while you're kicking & screaming? 

Do you mean that you were forced into change by your illness?

Yeah, something like that. One tends to fight anything that gets us out o the comfort zone. When fighting doesn't work and you realize that you are just making more pain then if you're smart you just let go and let it all happen. Things usually begin to get easier about then. It's scary though, at first letting go of those attempts at control.

I'm not a fan of veganism, but I am certainly a fan of not eating dairy. Dairy is the devil's food, oh so delicious... and destructive. Meat is great though, at least wild game and perhaps organic or kosher/halal ethically farmed and killed meat. That makes me feel good, grounded and full of energy.

I make a point of eating whole foods. A lot of brown rice or quinoa; dark veggies(kale, tomatoes, etc.;) tons of garlic, ginger, and apple cider vinegar for flavour; and solid protein like seafood, chicken or occasionally a nice big piece of red (iron filled) meat. This kind of diet feels both cleansing and substantial.

The problem I find with veganism is that its difficult to be full for very long. In the short term one feels purified (because of all the veggies and whole grains) but after a while just hungry... You can only eat so much tofu (it's actually quite unhealthy to consume too much soy, it's full of pseudo estrogen.) That, and I can stand the moralism so many vegans cling to.

bug, i totally share your back-and-forth pattern with my diet and general health. I think something has changed in me recently, though, and I just can't keep repeating it in the same extreme. I've quit coffee ( i don't even enjoy the taste anymore,) I avoid dairy (aside from yogurt and the occasional shot of milk in my tea,) and I crave the foods I used to have to remind myself to make - whole grains, greens and lean meat. I've recently begun taking much more pleasure in making good food and eating it. Now the only thing I have to change is my pattern of leaving the house without eating - this gives me blood sugar crashes. Bad.

As for the spiritual element of diet, I suppose that feeling grounded and energized and mentally stable opens up some doors.

I agree with a lot of what you say. I think a lot of vegetarians don't really eat that well. I'm doing a lot of research and experimentation. I don't know if I will continue like this forever but I have found it to be really healing for a crisis. Raw foods seem to help the most.

I find that eating enough healthy fats helps a lot with being hungry.

I tend to overeat anyway. At least now I'm overeating cucumbers and olives which is a lot better then overeating cheese and chips. For me at least.

Try having an oryoki or something. It's a formal Japanese meal that many sects of Buddhism have adopted. It's quite powerful, and if you want to bring more awareness into your life, this is a great way to do it.

I did it for a week, twice a day at a sesshin a month ago, and wow. We bring so much shit into the very simple act of eating. Greed often comes up; the comparing mind is eager to compare how much you're eating with others; intense desire often arises, for satisfaction, for sense gratification, for that feeling of fullness...

I would highly recommend it. You don't need to do formal chanting or the ritual involved necessarily, but I'd definitely give it a shot man.
