Is this San Pedro?

I stumbled upon this while down at the hardware store today and thought it looked familiar. I'm a total amateur when it comes to cacti so it would great if someone could give me an ID for this little fella. Cheers

Found it at Bayswater Bunnings. Yeah I thought it looked a bit unusual how it tapers down at toward the base.

It's not "The" San Pedro (note the lack of V notches above the areoles) though it's definitely a Trichocereus/Echinopsis and quite possibly pachanoid. IMO it looks like it could be T. Scopulicola but I'm pretty new to cacti so take my word with a grain of salt.

Pedantics aside, you've got yourself a nice cactus which contains nice alkaloids.

deffinitely a Trich could well be a scop does it have small to non existent spines on the uper areloes?, time will tell either way.

she's skinny at the bottom cause she's a seedling.

Do u mind letting us in on what u paid for her?

It is a pedro the lack of notches is caused by a high water content.

On what grounds do you make this claim? I'm not implying you're wrong or anything I've just never heard this before.

I'm adamant that it's not "true" san pedro though. Upon further investigation I'm fairly convinced that this is a "Backeberg clone" T.Pachanoi.

Yep small spines on the upper areloes and get bigger towards the bottom. It was $8.99. Anyone know roughly how old it would be?

Probly a year & a bit.

I'd vote scop, somebody was saying the other day the best way to pick a scop isto grab it, if u dont get spiked its a scop, do'nt apply to young seedlings as they can b spiny.

Jeez, I thought a 'true' San Pedro was a 'Backeberg clone'. Didn't Backeberg bring a San Pedro back from Peru, and isn't that the plant that most domestic Pedro's come from ?

Anyway, it looks like a Pedro to me, and I've over 100 in my backyard, from seedling size on up ...

Well when a san pedro is heavily watered its ribs swell. When it is dehydrated the ribs go thinner and the notches become more apparent.

Yes the vast majority of domestic san pedro apparently originate from the Backeberg clone but from what I gather the Backeberg clone is not the Pachanoi used traditionally in Peru/Equador. The issue has been discussed fairly extensively on TheNook forums but there seem to still be a few loose ends.

i share that view also... the backberg clone looks nothing like the traditional plants of peru and ecuador.
anyone who wants to know more should read M S Smith's articles on the matter.
