San Pedro from Lowes
    #6707707 -

So recently I was at Lowes and I was browsing through the cacti section. Something that looked trichocereus-like caught my eye, and after reading the plant tag I saw that it was indeed trichocereus panachoi. It was only maybe $8 so I went ahead and picked one up. The pot is labled "Cacti and Succulents."

Has anyone had any experience with these pedros from Lowes? High, Low, or Mid-range content?

which more or less means that there is no telling, growing it out and the doing an extraction are the only way to tell how potent a certain specimen is...or doing it the traditional way, and make a brew, and ride on a journey withe the spirit of mescalito

Alright. I haven't noticed any yet, but I will certainly take a second look. The climate I am in is fairly dry (southwest US) and there really isn't the same bug problems here as there seems to be in most places.

Oh, secondly, right now its about 2 feet away from a 50W grow light bulb thats in a desk lamp. Its getting 12 hours a day of light. Is this enough?

If it came from Lowes, be sure to watch for moths. Lowes cacti are lousy with the larva of one of two species that like to lay their eggs on the cactus spines. Those hatch, the larva burrow into the cactus and munch away. Larger cacti can usually survive, but they'll hollow out a little one in no time. If they're in ther now, you'll have a hard time telling since their entry holes callous over. But, if they burrow their way out, they can wreak havoc with other cacti in your collection.

I noticed that most of the cacti at Lowes seemed to be suffering from that kind of infestation. I doubt location has much to do with it, since their cacti all come from one or two places (and, in any case, I probably live near you -- I'm in CO).

Also, people keep mentioning this, but I'll mention it one more time. They sometimes fill those cacti with systemic pesticides so, if you're planning on grinding the cactus up for a more traditional purpose (and by that I mean treating hair-loss with a salve made from the San Pedro pulp, as the natives have been known to do), then you should be mindful of the fact that it may be laden with liver-wrecking phosphorous compounds.

If you plan on using the San Pedro to treat your hair-loss, you should make a clone by taking a cutting of one of the offshoots, and letting that offshoot grow to several feet first.

Hrmmm... anything I can do about the potential infestation? Pesticides maybe? Then again, you are right about the liver-wrecking thing.

This sounds like a pretty bad deal. I'm tempted to just throw it away now. The intent was of a traditional, ceremonial nature, but I definitely would not risk the possibility of destroying myself with it.

Nah, I'd just wait and see. Also, I've only actually seen them in the gymnocalycium grafts, but the little assholes are there. Your SP probably isn't infested with them, I just wanted you to have a heads-up.

Is there any method to remove the phosphorous compounds? (maybe if its some sort of phosphoric acid, do an acid-base reaction to get rid of it?)

Heh, I'm sorry. I'm sounding like my mother. Certainly hang on to the cactus -- it's just that Lowes can be a royal pain in the ass when it comes to getting them. I don't know how to get rid of the systemic pesticides, but a few people around here have raised some concerns about them. The only way I know of is to do the offset trick to dilute the stuff. They may not even be phosphorous based (the one I happen to own for controlling mealy bugs is, but there are some out there that are only available to commercial growers, and I have no idea as to what might be in them).

How tall is the cactus right now? If it's small, it might not have a huge concentration. SP's will put on a foot a year, so you might not need to wait that long.

Right now its at 7.2 inches. Should I just wait until its maybe 6 times that size?

I would. Besides, I don't think that a 7.2 inch SP will have much effect on a receding hairline, if you catch my drift.

Regarding the moths, I can't find anyone who has ever had a moth problem with a San Pedro. In any case, they would be easy to spot on such a small cactus if they were there. Sorry for being a worry-wart.

Hahaha, I'm the same way as you regarding paranoia over infestations. Cobweb got me once, but never again. Oh, and I definitely catch your drift about the receding hairline. What exactly would the larva look like? My cactus seems to have some small white dots on it they can be brushed off with the finger, that never seem to move. What might these be?

They wouldn't happen to look like this, would they?

Not at all. They are not hairy like that, and they are not clumped near each other. They are fairly evenly distributed.

Hmm. I wouldn't know then. They certainly aren't moth eggs, since those come as eggsticks attached to a needle. And those fuzzy spots in the above picture are start of a mealy bug infestation.

Probably, they're nothing. I'd just wipe the things off to be on the safe side.
