If a meteor the size of Canada was for going to hit next week, what would happen?

Would "humanity" reveal itself in the form of enormous amounts of theft, violence, rape, fire, etc? Does humanity demand control and punishment in order to succeed as a species? If these concepts are removed from the equation in the human brain, does the human element come out in it's purest form?

I'd say a good number of people would shoot people who were misbehaving and causing trouble, but overall there would just be enormous of chaos and death far before the meteor ever got here.
