Dreams and karma
    #7329101 -

I don't have a sophisticated understanding of karma. Matter of fact, I have pretty much zero understanding.

In the sense I want to talk about it, karma would mean something like the momentum of past action as it relates to your experience now - in which case 'unraveling' or 'undoing' that karma would mean observing that mental momentum and calming the water, letting the mud settle so to speak.

Every night I do a bit of yoga, meditation, read a good book, and listen to peaceful, soothing music. This is the way I reflect on the day and try to make my mind placid and reflective.

At night I dream, and these dreams usually involve people and places whose forms I have very strong mental attachments to. When I wake up in the morning I usually have very strong emotions to deal with; often there is a great sense of yearning and there is an emotion which I recognize as having been part of many of my dreamscapes before, but which I cannot attach to any person, event, or way of being in my own life. It's like my mind is trying to squeeze the emotion into a box and it doesn't fit anywhere, and the result is unease - negative mind momentum.

The best thing I've ever done is meditate for 30 minutes shortly after waking up and before eating. It's hard because my mind is trying to get my attention from a thousand different angles in the morning and my energy is ofen low because of poor diet and lack of exercise - which can give tons of negative mental momentum in themselves.

I know some people feel that a low dose of salvia to start the day is a good way to loosen one's attachment to this dream momentum. My dreams, I realize, effect my karma for the rest of the day, and I don't think this is a good thing because if I don't sit and meditate or do something to become aware of my dream emotions, I tend to ascribe them to people I'm interacting with and situations I'd like (or wouldn't like) to see arise - a layer of delusion.

Anyway, these are just some thoughts to marinate on. Any insight would be super.

at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I don't understand Karma either and see little evidence of it as a consistency.

Maybe I should've just left the word Karma out altogether. It seemed catchy for the title.

But you do agree that the mind builds momentum around certain experiences, yes? And that this momentum can detract from or increase our awareness of our present experience? ('Good' versus 'bad' karma.)

My understanding of Karma is that it is nothing more than what science refers to as "Cause and Effect". Some believe that it can reach across lifetimes, and is some universal law of "I punched that kid in the face when I was 5, and now that I'm 32, and some guy punched me in the face....karma." Although, I kind of see it as "you reap what you sow".

Quote:
Some believe that it can reach across lifetimes

Ok, let's say that person A murders person B, and according to so-called karmic law, person B would get a chance to settle scores in his next lifetime, with person A.

Now i want to know who arranges this meeting, this coming together of events happening again in the next lifetime.

I see plenty of evidence of karma as causality. But not reaching across lifetimes, except for in transpersonal psychology, holotropic breathwork, and the studies of Stanislov Grof. And of course, I throw in the disclaimer of this and that as far as his work goes.

Again, I don't think karma across lifetimes is meant to be taken literally. It's all just something to consider to help a person lead a better life.

I see plenty of evidence of karma

You mean the way some murderers and rapists never get caught and how others like OJ Simpson cash in on their murders by writing books, and still others like George Bush order the death of thousands, including kids, then goes for a nice vacation at 'the ranch', and still others lead selfless lives helping others, then die young and in horrible pain from leukemia?

Is that the evidence of karma that you see?

It's all just something to consider to help a person lead a better life.

Made up magical stuff is not necessary for people to lead good lives. I don't buy any crap that can only be talked about but never seen or measured.

Most people who know me would say I lead a good, happy life full of wonder, compassion, and empathy. No magic required.

You took my quote COMPLETELY out of context and built a straw-man around it. You left out "as causality". You don't see causality around you?

You don't see causality around you?

Sure, I see causality everywhere. What I don't see is karmic repercussions of anyone's actions.
