If you act purely out a spirit of love and kindness, if your actions do not reflect selfishness, then you are rewarded with a sense of serenity

Some people don't like serenity. Rapists and murderers get off on hurting others. The more hurt and terror they inflict, the better they feel.

I understand what you're saying, but you're implying that serenity is the universal goal. It is for me, but I know the opposite is the goal for many.

How can any of us even know with any certainty that the general definition of 'good' is what we should be converging on. What if the universe is such that 'evil' is what the universe is about.

From what I see of nature, where animals are ruthlessly killed by predation and disease, it seems more the latter than the former. Even among humans this is the rule more than the exception.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

I don't necessarily think of karma in terms of retribution. I think of it more in terms of "like attracts like." The energy you generate tends to follow you around, and attract similar energy from others. So if you create negative energy around you, you'll attract negative energy from others. So you may not necessarily "get what's coming to you," but you will most likely tend to attract the kind of energy you give off.

animals have to suffer the karma of having to be predators, and prey.

they live in an uncertain world.

you say not everyone wants serenity? Part of the reason for altruism is to escape your own personal suffering. I would say some are just more dysfunctional than others.

what we look at the universe is based upon the life of beings on planet earth..... we can't really make a fair judgement as to what the universe is, though we can say that planet earth is more hostile and neutral than compassionate.

for those who choose to act like animals, they inherit the lives of animals. then it's just a matter of rebirth or nonexistence. nonexistence doesn't make sense to me because existence doesn't make sense, and yet here we are.....

but that's a huge debate in itself.

Excuse me. Is this something you know to be true or is this a religious doctrine?

It is beyond me how people can claim to know these things with such positive statements. For me having an experience in this so called real life is where positive statements come from and then I must admit they are subjective. Just because I was brought up as a Buddhist and like the religion does not make me an authority on what actually happens after death. What am I missing?

Reincarnation is an excellent spiritual tool for control of the underclass. If they obsess about the ramifications of their actions _into their next life/lives_, they will be even less politically effective than they are now.

Make it so!

To me, Karma simply is another way of lookong, or vantage point of the idea, "as above, so is below". It infers the fractal, or infiniteness in either direction. Systems within systems.

It's just a more eastern way of rationalizing the same concept.

I truly belive we all choose to be who we are and choose to "be here". If that's true, then someone that wants to be here to be a dickhead and a total ruthless ass will try to create that at the moment of death for themselves...and each time trying to get a more "prefect" version of an "evil bad guy" -- just to have experienced it. That can explain why the more bad shit you do, the worse your next life is supposed to be.

any takers?
