Let's start a Cult.

No, though, I'm fer serious.

I think first, we should come up with a framework of what a "religion" or "cult" should provide.

1. A religion should have some kind of Icon that is worshipped or revered.

2. A religion must provide community of support for it's members.

3. A religion should provide a system of beliefs, (I use these terms loosely) that it's members agree on. The beliefs themselves can be completely non-sensical, as long as all the members agree.

4. A religion must have community meetings (I suppose in this day in age, the internet can provide that).


So far that all I can think of framework wise... any suggestions? Comments, Ideas?

why? All successful religions have one. It doesn't have to be a god, or even living for that matter. It could be a big rock. As long as it brings it's members together as a community.

successful religions? successful in what? :lol:

we don't need an image to bring us together, an image to be misinterpreted (even a rock), an image to put on your mantle to flaunt your beliefs.  fuck all that shit!  our 'image' can be the air we cannot see so we are constantly enveloped by it, externally and internally.

I think a church is a big jump. Yeah, I'm serious. But I think we should come up with a real framework first.

Then we can fill in the blanks with the rock people are supposed to worship.

But I thought that Shroomerites were already a cult! Like the mystical body of the Christian cultus - one body with numerous members (limbs, organs, tissues, cells) each performing their own specific functions. I mean, in Christendom, you've got, for example, high church traditions among Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Protestantism, and you have humble churches within those traditions as well. You've got Ethiopian Coptic churches with their own holy books that would freak out the obsessive-compulsive fundamentalist Christians. There are cathedrals that took 300 years to build, and there is the opposing attitude of transient tent-revivalist. Catholics say the Eucharist must be of unleavened bread because leaven is a metaphor for sin, and because the Jewish matsoh was unleavened. Then again, the Othodox say the Eucharistic bread must be leavened (risen bread) because Christ, the Bread of Life, "has risen" from the dead. OK, I can see the symbolism in both sides. Catholics believe in transubstantiation of bread into Body of Christ, Protestants do not believe this - it remains symbolic. I could go on ad nauseum but I won't.

Shroomerites come in all types too. They regard the Shroom as central, yet only some regard Shrooms as Eucharistic. For some they are Entheogenic (God-generating), for others they are Psychedelic (mind-manifesting), and for others they are just drugs to have fun with! Gnostic psychology categorized these differences as: Pneumatic, Psychic and Hylic respectively (Spiritual, Mental and Physical).

Please do yourself a favor and do not attempt to create fundamentalist Shroomerism, or whatever you wanna call it. Next thing you'll want is doctrines and dogmas and rigidly adhered to rituals. A liturgy will develop and those not abiding will become heretics and anathema and banned from The Shroomery until they repent. This is what happened to Christianity when Orthodoxy condemned all the spiritual explorers called Gnostics and then went after anyone of any faith who would not conform. Christianity became a religion of doctrines and lost its ability to save in the majority of those who called themselves Christians. It became a religion of mind, and mind-control, not of spirit and ultimate freedom as it was intended by Iesus Himself.

These are my comments and ideas that you requested.

No, thats the point of building your own. By creating our own it puts us in a better vantage point for proper study. Gorillas in the Mist , per say, having properly pieced together what a cult should be, we can better understand the human dynamic that drives it.

Does that make sense?

Yes it makes sense but I really think that if we pay enough attention to how this entire system works and analyze how people who are already involved in this (both those who are organizing those cults and those who follow them) we'll get the same view (or maybe even a better one).
Because if we choose to organize a cult, chances are that we might become corrupted, absorbed by our "roles" and this will make us unable to see and take note of every aspect of the phenomenon.

:lol:  Outside observation is just that, outside observation. We have tons of that already available.

I'm not proposing we actually organize some kind of freakish dildo worshiping cult. But that we assemble and establish a framework for a working cult first. After that, we can decide the details, and organize a working one for which to observe.

It's not even that the cult has to be god related or has to conflict with any existing religous beliefs.

The term cult implies worshiping by definition.
I think that any method of veneration addressed to no matter what (be in god, jesus, santa, a football team or a car) is dildo.
I think that those who are fully aware and analytical towards life can see what are the effects of a cult.
Basically it is a fake shield towards people's own insecurities, anxieties, fears, frustrations and the like.
Also those who organize those cults do it either for money, fame, delusion (the need to control one way or another) and which also has it's roots in fear.

Yes.
It doesn't necessarily have to be about about god or religion.
Like I said, it is about worshiping.
Any form of worshiping is a way of running away from personal responsibility.
Really we can elaborate on that hours and hours from all the possible aspects, I think that the data we already have is more than sufficient.
I think that if we realty look at who we are and we have been, we all are able to find moments when we were worshipers of something, we all are able to see why we did that and how our minds worked.

What exactly are you trying to find out (more than we can do now) by starting a cult?

:confused: I'm not try to prove or discover anything in particular, the observations to be done are in respect to Human social behavior, and the functions that a cult perform and the pyschological needs they fulfill.

I think you took my example too literally; This isn't an excercise in why or why not to start a cult. This is an exercise in functionality of a working cult. Really the cult itself is only a miniature scale human social heiarchey.

As exemplified in my first post. What are the requirements for a working cult? What about those particular things makes them necassary to the functioning of a cult? Why do cults work so well?

By hypothetically assembling a cult on paper, so to speak, we can look at it from a different aspect.

As anlytical individuals we do a great job of making blanket statements about how and why such things work. But as for really understanding them, most people, including myself, are clueless.
