Fuel is still being fed to the engine when you dont have your foot on the gas.

i was under the impression that the whole auto vs manual fuel economy issue was not true anymore. My father used to drive manuals for a long while because the OD saved on fuel during his 2 hr drive to work compared to the autos at the time. But that was back when the auto trannys were still pretty new and inefficient, now that they've had a long while to develop them i've been under the impression that there is no difference in fuel economy. The way i see it the biggest selling point of a manual transmission (to those that aren't gear heads or people who prefer them) is the fact that a.) they're cheaper to repair and maintain and b.) cars with manual tranny's are usually cheaper off of the lot when you buy the car.

The only manual transmissions i've ever used have been on tractors and dirt bikes. I've driven a manual around a parking lot once and i can shift and get the car to move but i wouldn't feel safe taking it out on the highway. I don't really prefer one over the other but since i can't really drive a manual on the road i have to go with an auto tranny. However i can really see where the fun of owning a manual comes in and i've always wanted to learn since a lot of my friends own manual cars.

You wouldnt be able to heel toe or even engine brake with a slush box

You are one with the car in manual

Constant Velocity Transmission.

Get a clue.

CVT = Continuously Variable Transmission

Where'd you get your clue?

My Prius has one, but it's an ECVT... same thing, but ELECTRIC!

I wish it came in manual, which is my prefered, but there is only one gear I guess!!

Yeah, I was thinking "Continuously Variable" but typed "Constant Velocity"... Shows what a pint of Bacardi can do to a brain at that hour.

sorry, thats not what I meant; yes you're right about that. but if the car is in gear and your feet are off the clutch and gas.. The engine will eventually stall and the car will stop abruptly

Yeah, the difference is a mile or two per gallon more in gas mileage on todays autos vs manuals, nothing much.  But CVTs will have the ability to adjust their power for you and give you better shifting points as well compared to a conventional automatic transmission. (In theory)

My 500 HP 351 connects to a manual t5 tranny, has to be manual.

Manuel = way more fun mang.

automatic, just because it's safer and i highly value life.

If a driver should become incapacitated behind the wheel of a manual transmission automobile, there will be no more throttle input, causing the engine to lug and die. In an automatic, the car will continue moving at a minimum speed, possibly becoming dangerous to spectators or pedestrians.

wrong, that manual will keep on pulling you about the same as an auto...at least until you hit a hill or something that it doesn't have the power idling to clear, exactly the same with the auto

Uhm... what? If you go from any open throttle position, to abrupt close throttle position, the engine will lug. This lugging will cause the motor to stall, and the car will stop if it's in gear.

You'd have to be going down hill at a high right of speed for the motor to continue to run. Even in this case once the car reaches and obstacle and is forced to stop the motor will stall. This is not the case with automatic transmissioned cars. They will continue to run once they hit something or even if you jockey the throttle from dead stop.

Go ahead and try this with your manual car in a flat parking lot:

1.Start the car out in idle, this takes a very sensitive clutch foot, but it's possible once you get the hang of it.

2.At this point the car should be accelerating VERY slowly, possibly lugging depending on the engine power output. NOW, Jockey the throttle (go to Wide-Open Throttle, then closed throttle). This will cause most cars to stall.

Ok, now that we know that at idle any sudden throttle input will likely cause stalling.

Lets try this:

1.Start the car out in first, now shift into second. Now shift into third.

2. You should have had to apply moderate throttle input to maintain speed in 3rd gear. Now, abruptly go to closed throttle position.

Once the rpm's drop back to idle the car will lug, and stall.

OK, Now take your automatic to the same parking lot, do all of the same tests and see if you can get the car to die with out turning off the ignition.

The only exceptions I can think of are a handful of fairly high-output vehicles, most of them are still geared in a manner which causes them to stall out in any gear other than 1st.

CVTs kind of confuse me.. since theres only up and down and no clutch... I've only driven one once though...

Manuel taught me how to enjoy driving... I went from an '88 Cadillac Brougham (aka the hood wagon) to a 5 speed '99 Honda Civic ... with the d16y8 v-tech of course

And thank you Sunny, for spelling that out to those who haven't a clue

wtf no mang a 351 wont ever stall if its brand new! well when it is a 50o torque you know, its pretty hard to kill it!

Anyone need a mobile home moved lol, jk it has a racing cam, but we could throw in a truck cam and I could haul a mobile home I bet.

So no it wont die from open to close throtel, because there is a cylender fireing so often on a v8, that even my old 302 never died on me, well it died when it was running on 6 cylinders and had a shitty stock carb that was fucked. It died often then.

But all it will do is it will just start pulling hard, and then before I know it it just time to shift.

Oh by far manuals will always be a bit more fun. But they do make sports transmissions that are automatic that can shift faster than any manual (paddles in formula one cars and such). Those are all electro-hydraulic.

Like I stated, the exception to the rule is with extremely high-output engines. The only other exception I could think of was if you had some kind of lo-lo splitter box, like on a specialized 4x4. But thats all mostly a matter of gearing.

Point being, you can't kill an auto with turning off the ignition. Unless it's running like shit.

No. Fuel injected, automatic will not die when you go back to closed throttle position, even if you're in overdrive. If you don't believe me, go ahead and try it out.

You can't kill an automatic transmission in the way you do a manual simply because they're two completely different types of transmissions that work completely different.

Automatic transmissions are freefloating gears spinning in hydraulic fluid, you also have a hydraulic coupling that's assisted with electronic gearing. That coupling can move freely, almost like putting it in neutral, that's why the car doesn't stall when you're not moving (yet there's always pressure being applied by the hydraulic coupling).

Hmm. I can't explain shit for shit. I wish I had a diagram on how the hydraulic coupling worked in stall. That's when you've got the break applied and the car is still in gear. Neutral the coupling is actually in a different position.

yah, i can attest to the fact that unless you park or put the car out of gear on an auto car it will move until it hits something large enough to prevent it from moving. The only other thing i can think of that will prevent an auto car from moving at idle speed is an incline steep enough to cause it to stop, it's how i used to park at my one friends place, id let it idle up to the point on his driveway where it couldn't move and just place it in park and get out.

Manual cars are also a helluva lot safer to drive in shitty weather too, i often find myself keeping my auto in 2nd or first gear on icy roads in the winter to get more traction and to keep me from going to fast.
