First Day with Manual Transmission
    #3488066 -

I've looked forward to this day for a long long time. My friend finally broke down and let me try out his stick shift. Boy was I bucking like a motherfucker, but, soon enough, I got the hang of it. I have to work on a few things like starting in 1st gear, shifting from 2nd to 3rd (without missing 3rd and going into 5th) and most of all, reverse. It would help if I was learning on a car that doesnt have over 200,000 miles on it and needs a new clutch among other things, but, hey, at least I am happy.

Next stop- buying a new car.

first time i drove stick i was pretty good at it... in a little 87 toyota tercell... it's cause of all the video games, just kinda knew when to shift and all.... but yea, the occasional wrong gear and such... one time i was on this hill, sitting at a red light, and some asshole got up RIGHT behind me... well, i had to gas the fuck out of it to get it to not staul and roll into the guy...

just use your parking break if someone does that and you're scared of rolling back on them. apply the parking brake, then start to engage the clutch slowly as you let off the brake...no rolling backwards and no excessive revving once you get the hang of it! =)

To not miss third gear dont try to put it into third. Just nock it out of second and let it goto the center then push up. You wont miss again.

A lil tip I learned along the way.

I learned on an '85 Nissan Skyline 5 speed. Good car. I find that to make 3rd easier, dont make a drastic movement with the stick, its a subtle move up, right and into 3rd, as i found my initial problem was trying to do a big movement when really it is quite small.

it's really easy to learn... you'll have it down in a few days once you start driving one around. i don't think i'll ever buy a car with an automatic transmission if i can avoid it.

when you need to switch into third, you don't have to move the stick to the right with your hand. it will naturally center behind third gear. let it do that and then move it up.

I learned on an old '84 nissan 4x4 that always used to grind going into 3rd unless you had it at exactly the right rpms...the clutch on that thing was a beast too! Of course the vaccuum lines were messed up also so everytime you braked you had to brake with the left part of your right foot and rev the engine with the right part of your right foot or it'd cut off on you. man was that thing fun to drive through the woods though!!

driving stick is fun, but it can get annoying sometimes, like city driving, unless no one's around, and thier's fairly large blocks...
