Yep you should be fine as long as they're smooth changes.

Do not throw it into 1st gear at 60 MPH. That will bring pain.

yes, its actually good to run through the gears in an automatic from time to time. also i suggest letting up off the gas while making the upshift.
this will reduce torque load on older transmissions while still being good for it.
like above said no neutral drops or any fun stuff like that.

Usually when you manually command 1'st and second the transmission bumps up the line pressure from 80-100 psi to like 300+, which can get you home if you've got a seriously mangled unit, or will hold the gear better and probably cause the cluch packs a bit less wear if you're baggin the shit out of things. Overall i'd say dont downshift that way, brake pads are cheaper than a rebuild, i've done it when I thought i was going to run out of braking distance but other than that use it to hold a gear/control the shift or whatever, shouldnt have problems as long as you're not a idiot about things.

People around here call that a shift brake, and I fucking everytime someone says it. They don't realize it causes you to slow down because it fucks your transmission.

I don't drive anything but manuals, but I'm always waiting for the day when I lose my brakes, and I have to shut the engine off, put it into fifth gear for the least mechanical advantage over the engine, and use the clutch as a brake.

1st gear specifically? i know truck drivers do it all the time especially involving hills and such cuss you'll never slow down with just breaks in a big ol truck, but they do it one gear at a time tho

Maybe those brakes air different because I would assume their air brakes or something? So maybe a different mechanism all together.
But I always thought doing that in a car etc is baaaaad.

i actually heard, dunno if its true, that the good manual drivers of cars downshift each gear as they slow down too. Altho i think the reason they do that is mostly because if you have to speed back up you don't wanna still be in 4th gear or something and going 10 miles per hour, but i imagine this also helps save there brakes too but there obviously not going to downshift while redlining or something

Semi trucks have a manual transmission. The engine actually has a mechanism called a "Jake Brake". It actually uses the engine's compression as a brake to slow the truck down. It's entirely safe to use the transmission to brake in that circumstance, but not for a car with an automatic transmission. You can use a car's manual transmission to slow down, but that's mainly using an engine who's rotational inertia is slowing down to slow the car. It isn't nearly as effective as a Jake Brake. With an automatic transmission, you can have the same effect by using the engine's dropping rpms to slow the car, but when you jam it into a lower gear, the engine can immediately rev above the red line. It is also very hard on the transmissions torque converter to have to match a slow spinning engine to an input gear that is now spinning very fast.

Normally, anytime you expect to slow down in a manual vehicle, you put the car into neutral. You can easily put it back into gear quick enough if you need to speed up. Also, if you still have the car in fourth gear and are slowing down or going ten mph, this assumes you still have the clutch held in. This is bad for a clutch's throw out bearing. The less time you spend with the clutch depressed the better. Your throwout bearing will last you years longer. Don't ever sit at a red light with the clutch depressed until you see the other side change to yellow and know you'll be moving soon. If you are racing, you want to down-shift through every gear, unless you know the gear you'll need to be in when exiting a corner.
