Martial arts
    #7157480 -

I've decided I want to pursue a martial art.. I'm not sure which yet.. but I'm swinging towards jujitsu .. I used to do judo when I was younger and I had a natural talent for it.. I was an 13 year old green belt .. but I broke my wrist climbing and never went back to it.

Apparently there are quite a few good schools around here for various martial arts (I even recall there being a 'wu shu' school).

What martial art would you pursue?

I'm asking what you would do..

Personally I'm looking for something thats physically requiring / practical / would be good in street fights / elegant (grace = k3y)

Well, Kung Fu (Shao Lin Do) meets those requirement.

But you might just go watch a class at each school around, and see which one has the most female students. Especially good if they are advanced students, you can ask them to help you with stuff.

If you want to be a good street fighter then take some boxing lessons and some wrestling lessons. Do that for two years and you'll be able to beat the shit out of 99% of people.

As far as martial arts goes...I'd say go for kung fu. If you get good then you can destroy people. Karate is more of a showy martial art and not as practical in a real fight.

Muay Thai

When you absolutely, positively got to beat up every motherfucker in the room, accept no substitutes.

Brasilian Joo-Jitsoo and Judo are also good, but myself; I like to hit people.

Yeah, Mauy Thai is good. It looks like all it is is punching, low kicking, and grabbing an opponents head and smacking it off of your knee. But, those three things are very effective in a fight.

It is the art of eight limbs.

Two Feet
Two Knees
Two Elbows
Two Fists

Shogun trains at Chute Boxe where they practice a form of Muay Thai adapted for Vale Tudo developed by Master Rudimar.

I enjoy practicing aikido. I'm not really interested in beating the crap out of people, I just want to be able to defend myself if the situation should arise.

Well, you don't have to use it to beat people up. But it would be your best bet to defend yourself in a street fight. Where I'm from if you take someone down, expect to get stomped. That's just the way it is.

I'd rather do a martial art than box; Its the discipline and control that attracts me to it.

Muay thai looks somewhat like kickboxing; only dirtier.. I can see where that would be handy for street fighting, but I'm also looking for grace that comes with martial arts.. I don't want to go out and kill people; I just want to be able to defend and annihilate while doing so..

The amount of discipline and control involved in what ever MA you end up doing will be completely dependant on your instructor. Muay Thai is a very ritualisic and religous sport. You even do a ritual dance before competing among other things. It's far from "dirty kickboxing" unless your instructor teaches it that way.

Also Muay Thai is more graceful than judo or bjj imo. Sure, it's striking but so kung fu, wu shu, etc.

My only real advice is don't join a McDojo.

Wow! I'm glad I'm not where you are from...
Aikido is widely used worldwide by police forces. It's extremely effective for controlling people. I'm not really interested in street fighting.

Don't get me wrong, I've got utmost respect for muay thai. I'm sure there are plenty of muay thai students that could kick the crap out of me.I'm not trying to say that my art is better than yours. I'm just stating what I like about aikido.

Seriously though, I'm always impressed by aikido experts when I see them. Maybe look into it.
