what is the basic theory of casing????

i have had great sucsess with the ol brf cake. im thinking of attempting a casing. i have done one just as a experment and it worked a bit but dried out. (verm, crumbled cake, verm) any way i was thinking if some one could explain the reasosn for each part of a casing and maybe the diffrent materials used in the casing it may make sence for me. this is what i am thinking of trying. base layer of lets say, vermiculite, nice and moist only a couple drops when a hand full is squeezed. then i crumble the cake on top the moist verm. then a layer of wheat hey and horse poo. should i use a top layer? just verm? jiffy mix (verm, coir, hint of lime). ok so i cased it all and now i toss er into the fruiting chamber? let it sit and let pins start then fruit it.

You use different casing layers to provide moisture to the fruiting substrate. Since mushrooms are 90% water they pin and fruit bigger with larger yeilds. They do not provide any nutrients to the fruiting substrate.
