Golden Rice

Hey, I'm new here
I was wondering if anyones ever heard of Golden Rice? It's not just ANY old grain, its a superfood chock full of nutrition, at the moment there is a prototype in development 'Golden Rice II' that has upto 23 times as many beta-carotines as the original Golden Rice (talk about superfood!)

It could be theoretically possible that this rice could make the most optimum cake, the downside is that there are no plans to make it commercial, but i'm sure it's not impossible to obtain a cutting or plant strain and propogate one's own rice if they have the right connections.

Beta-Carotene is just a colourant. If is used by the body to synthesise vitamin A and in high amounts can be toxic, and even make some cancers spread faster.

It is present in reddy/orange coloured foods such as carrots and pumpkin.

It isn't a very important nutrient really, and for mushrooms probably even less so.

I am aware of toxicity, but I doubt the levels exceed too much for it to cause such a problem (like a serving of carrots).

The project is in early days, and is not going to be limited to Vitamin A deficiency in the 3rd world

You do have to remember that what is a vitamin for a human does not necessarily mean it is a vitamin for other living organisms

All vitamin is (in the human case) is a substance needed for correct metabolical function that the human body can't produce and so has to get it from it's food.

But for example fungus produces loads of of B group vitamins, which is why vegetarians take beer yeast as a dietary supplement. So for fungus, B vitamins aren't actually vitamins because they can produce them themselves.

In fact I think it isn't because of the vitamins in the husk that we use brown rice but because of the essential fatty acids in that part of the rice.
