Whole grain brown Rice Vs. ground powder rice
    #4054788 -

I don't wanna do the PF tek(using powdered rice), I would like some tips on the specifics regarding measurements, additional ingredients(verm) and procedures using whole rice grains to birth and crumble. that's pretty much all I gotta work with at the moment (no popcorn or rye available) :frown: . also I am going to use hydroton balls as a substitute to perlite. any suggestions about that?

Don't crumble, case them whole.  Advantage of whole grain over BRF cakes:  Almost 100% nutritional content, where as BRF cakes have a substantial amount of verm.  Fast colonization times.  Properly done, pint jars of whole grain will smoke any BRF 1/2 pinters.  Did I mention lots of nutrition?

Follow the 9er tek: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7923

Use Lundenbergs Nutrafarmed brown rice.

And like I said before, case them whole:

I'm using a larger tray for fruiting, also i'm trying to get a good pinset, which if i'm correct will mean that I will have to crumble 3-4 cakes evenly accross the bottom layer of (hydroton balls and vermiculite - Sterile of course  ) but I was almost convinced that I should  be using Verm in the substrate itself to maintain humidity levels. top casing will be a ready-made mix of peatmoss-verm-perlite which will be pasteurized to say the least. This will be my first one.But I gotte make sure I do this right, already make spore syringes of the Koh Samui super strain from spores.. any sopport and advice would be appreciated

Studies show:
if you cook the rice fully, i.e. good to eat, you won't need any verm in there other than on top to seal the jar.
Also recommended would be flax seed meal, per the 9er tek. It's dee-lishus.
Maybe some ground WBS? Makes sense. One Tbsp/pint of rice sounds good.

p.s. It's important to cook your additives with the rice.

yeah, this method works much much better than using BRF/verm. on top of that, you can add stuff to the water when you steam your rice to imbue the rice with certain properties, EG. coffee, vitamins, whatever. brown rice is a insanely fast colonizer. ive gotten cakes colonized within 2 weeks, which with BRF/verm its taken up to 4 weeks, usually cause the damn cakes dry out at the top and get soggy on the bottom. while im on this topic, remember to steam your rice throughly so its full of water, but before you pack your jars, let the rice evaporate all the steam thats on it or else you'll get condensation in the jars and the bottoms will get soggy and slowly colonize, and create a haven for any rogue contam.

I cut my cakes in half at first, but they were too bulky for the container, so i ended up crumbling em. since not alot of people use straight brown rice (im using the addition of a small plant in my grow chamber BTW), ill post my results so us rice enthustiasts can see what crumblings effects are.

but to say the obvious, crumbling takes longer only because they have to restructure their network, but in the end you end up getting more per square inch of casing to fruit, and a more even fruit on top of that.

GL though, tell us of your results.

i'm going to proceed now with the whole brown rice grain topped with Verm. cook-CP-inoculate..etc. I think (just a guess) that 3-4 cakes crumbled would make a formidable substrate since it colonizes quick. I will post images if anyone spots something wrong or has any suggestions. BTW, probably should move this thread somewhere else. but hey, the more people see this the better. thanks a lot!

since the wgbr has to be cooked(boiled) would steam sterilization suffice, or would you only recommend it if a pc is available?

well, steaming is only to make the rice, but you still have to pack it in jars and PC it to sterilize the whole container.

no I understand that. What I was asking is can the jars then be boiled (pf style) or does the rice have to be pc'ed like other grains?

Looks good, but I highly advise you do not crumble your rice cakes into a casing. My experience with crumbling WGBR cakes has been pretty weak, but they'll really excel when cased whole.

Hmm I just did 3 quarts of brown rice, colonized incredibly quick BTW, and the chopped them all up and mixed them with 3 quarts of sterile moist verm and cased. Fruited it yesterday, comming up through the casing layer fine...we'll see how it fruits.

I got some in 1/2 pints and pints though that I plan on casing whole. They colonized incredibly quick too from spores...just mixed a little verm in when straining and packed it up to the lid, lid with tyvek over it just like normal then shot through both holes (1/2 cc each) and a bandaid over the holes. They're about 90-99% after 10 days now.. I see why you like it Diver..

That's cool Scat, sounds like rez effect. I'm sure it will do fine, my experience with crumbling WGBR always sucked, but I didn't really do enough crumbling to give reliable results.

Yes, it is awesome stuff. What brand did you go with? I have had best results with Lundenberg's Nutrafarmed. Their organic is so-so but cubensis seem to love the nutrafarmed.

I do both hehe. I put full cakes into container to be cased so that you get as many in there as possible. Then take 1-3 cakes usually and crumble those to fill in the gaps not filled by the full cakes. Spread around, level, case, re incubate for 3 days, and fruit. I have had some pretty good results so far. Feel free to experiment if you want, everybody has their own ways of doing things. As long as your understanding of everything is good, and you maintain good sterile conditions, you would be surprised what you might do. My latest cool experiment was wbs/poo cakes lol. Good luck with your efforts.

well, ive crumbeled mine for the first time, this is day 5, awesome mycellium growth on the substrate layer, but still no pinning. it took only about 5 days with a whole cake for the pinning to start. what sort of extra wait time am i looking at when crumbling the cakes?

Re: Whole grain brown Rice Vs. ground powder rice [Re: Abermelin]
    #4076338 -

Well when you break it up and case it, it takes about 3 days for it to fully recover and solidify and get through the casing layer so light can be exposed...but anytime a casing can take particularly long, just because, for pins to show up. I'd expect primordia anyday now though, depending on variables.

wha..? why cant i sterilize whole grain rice, or WBS by boil-sterilizing them? i'm gearing up to do that now :frown: i need a pressure cooker!

now that i've got all this lovely rice what should i do? just pound otu a couple more pf-tyle cakes? what happens when you use WBS instead of BRF? could one combine the two?

He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

Because it wont work. Thats the reasont he PF Tek was created. BRF and verm must be used. WBS or Brown Rice could be ground into a powder and make them PF cake style and boil sterilize. I'm really not sure why you can boil powder, but you need to PC whole grains. You can combine the two in any way.

No, it will work. Like I said before, whole grain brown rice is the only grain you can get away with boiling. 90 mins in a tight fitting lid will sterilize pint jars of WGBR.

Hmm I had never heard that before, I mustve missed it when you said it..

Personally I just find it easiest to PC everything, I'm not really sure what works besides that. But I know for damned sure, PC's work. If Diver says boil it, go for it...

rtek- i use the 50/50 verm, spagnum peat moss casing. 1 cup: peat, calcium carbonate, verm, water. thats the ratio. though consider using a little less carbonate and water...

i do my casings pretty light on the top, maybe 3/4" at most.

1 cup of cal carbonate to 2 cups of casing mix seems like WAY to much. You only need about a tablespoon or two per quart of casing mix. More doesnt usually hurt, but your wasting it.

uhhm..they're about 15 days old now from when I first injected the spore. now I don't know how the core of the substrate looks like of if there is colonization thick enough to cake. It is whole rice grain and good space and ventilation for the Myc to travel and get around. So just considering that, and the fact that it's my first time and constant temp has been a problem for me, I don't know when i should birth and PF or case or whatever. If you look closely at some of the pictures, there has been an increase of water dropplets forming on inside of the jar within the past couple of days. I would think this would increase the chances of contamination, but I haven't seen any color change, spots. etc. still is this healthy? I have noticed that cake inside might have shrinked, probably cause the myc is getting its enery from it. Also I have resorted to resting the jars upside down, the word around here is that it helps overall colonization. oh yeah, my dumbass forgot to inoculate through one hole in one of the jars, and now I'm paying the price, cause i'll probably have to wait longer.... that's where I stand at this point, and uhmm also, my girl is pissed for looking at this site too much, but that's another deal.

ok, it has been about 20 days and i'm thinking of casing already. the problems is that i'm a bit worried about the setup i'm thinking of puting my trays in. Im still doing the standard stuff like venting, cold shocking, watering, etc..well i drew this and thought it might help.

there was some stalling of the myc a while back. what I did is push the little button and pop the lid several times, i thought that would help in gasses being exchanged.. i don't know, it was probably worthless. anyway, please I would like some feedback or comments, it does help a lot.. thanks to all

should i continue to inoculate or should i continue the annonying search for rye?
