Karma - Intention vs. Results
    #6926403 -

The Jerry Falwell thread, where someone said Falwell is likely to reincarnate as an atheist in a Muslim country, got me thinking about intention versus results in karma. Perhaps people who have a better understanding of the principles of karma than I do can comment on the following situations.

1. Suppose (for the sake of argument; I'm not arguing that this is either true or false) that Jerry Falwell was honestly trying the best he knew how to serve God. In other words, though he was misguided, his intentions were fundamentally good. Would he still need to suffer by reincarnating as someone who his actions adversely affected in his most recent life?

2. Suppose someone had bad intentions, but ended up doing good. Lets say they planned to rob a bank, but when they got there the bank was on fire and they ended up rescuing several employees. What would the karmic implications of this be?

3. Suppose there is a mixture of good and bad. Lets say someone is sexually attracted to young children. They go to Russia or some other poor country and rescue some young children from the street. They take these kids back to their home country, raise them in a comfortable home, and send the kids to college. But, from the time the kids were quite small they had a sexual relationship with the kids. Certainly the sexual part damaged the kids. But without the person in question, the kids would likely have been dead instead. What is the karma for the person in question here?

4. What is the karma of someone like a "Robin Hood"? Such a person does wrong (stealing), but it could be argued that they made the world better off and helped poor people more than they hurt the rich people.

I think you have made a great case why karma makes no sense whatsoever.

I think karma ('action') is what happens while you're worrying about your karma. Isn't there some joke about the karma running over the dogma? Eh, it's not funny anyway.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Wouldn't that lie dependant upon the type of wood in question - the tree it was harvested from, the age and growing conditions of that wood, the age of the woodchuck, etc.? :smirk:

Woodchucks (or groundhogs) contrary to this cute alliteration, do NOT chuck wood. So the answer is none.

BUT, the tongue twister says IF the woodchuck could chuck wood.  That changes it to a hypothetical situation.  :plur::grin:

There in the mentality of Karma imprinted more or less in our minds, so that way you can say that yes, it exists because subconsciously we're creating something that might look like karma... it might more to that but we lack in evidence. :strokebeard:
Our personal beliefs are something else... which might point ti the existence of Karma. But then again... the mind does some pretty crazy shit so we don't know if it comes from self suggestion or not... I myself still don't know that
But I'm willing to change my mind if I'll encounter signs that would make me believe differently  :blazed:

Sorry, I understand that this was meant as a serious post and we started playing.  It happens.   But seriously,  I am not a Buddhist or Hindu so any concepts of karma in my mind would be so westernized I can't say if anyone would agree with me.  But I don't see how abusing children, even if it's in a fancy house, could bring someone positive karma.  I always felt karma came more from the little things you do daily than anything else.  If you're choices are good on the small scale then wouldn't it make sense that you'll make good choices on the grand scale?  So I'd say intent is what counts.:plur:

It's intent that counts in everything - good point  :yesnod:
BUT... we also have a subconscious which records in a "hidden" manner and even if we're not aware it plays a role in further actions and decisions, as well as mind frames. Maybe that could be the "karma"
I am not contradicting you... just wondering about the potential of our minds  :blazed:

Ah yes, the great untapped reserve.  But karma (to me) has more to do with the soul than the mind.  Really don't feel they are the same thing. Of course this is all conjecture.  When we finally find out for certain we won't be able to tell anyone about it.  :plur:

music: http://www.karma-lab.com/korgkarma/korgkarma.html

superstition: add idea of spiritual justice that spans lifetimes to encourage good behaviour in a group of people - this is as effective as promissing heaven and hell but slightly better since there is no finality, anyone can be redeemed incrementally by taking up a kinder nature, eventually, hopefully helping all beings reach enlightenment (endlessly relative).

abhidhamma philosophy (buddhist mental media): the feelings of pain and pleasure and neutrality can be modulated by the brain based upon our current and accumulated dispositions. It is assumed that the presence of bad roots lead to bad karma i.e. pain from hatred greed or delusion, and pleasure comes from good roots compassion, generosity, and wisdom.

This view of karma is much simpler than anything else and likely is part of an evolved social homeostasis. (i.e. not programmed or conditioned into us) Those with poorly developed prefrontal cortex, may not be engaged with their karma pain pleasure gateway and seem to verge on psychopathic.

I actually have a nephew, by marriage, who picks fights because he thinks they are fun and don't hurt.  He has issues for other reasons as well.  But are you talking pain/pleasure on the actual physical level or emotional?
This is why I prefaced my statements with admitting my ideas are westernized.  No matter how much we think we know there's always more to learn.  :plur:
