a karma question

In Buddhist religion, it is said that desire accumulates negative karma, resulting in an unhappy rebirth. Now, if we go through our lives with the intent to have a happy rebirth by practicing meditation and purifying our souls, then doesnt that count as selfishness in the sense that we desire to have a happy rebirth? Any buddhas wanna clear this up for me?

Lets say you wanted the enire world to become a perfect utopia, heaven. A place where people were all equal, and love was layered with happiness.
You want this because until every human being and particle of existence is happy, and having a perfect life, your mind cant rest.
Then...
There is the person who wants nothing but money, he figures the more jet skis and weapons he has, the happier he is. He kills people, nature, and does whatever it takes to get on top.
Sure they are both selfish, does it mean they are equal?
If so, I guess we are fucked.

heres an idea, how about we all construct our own personal religions? and live our lives according to what is best for our-selves (no...not selfish materialism!) just everyday living, flowing to our own dao.

Its not clear "Buddhist Religion" necessarily says all desire accumulates negative karma.
