Uhhh, John, You want to ellaborate on why you think they are not subbs??

I am not certain that they are subbs, but I don't see enough info or good enough photos to rule it out.

mj, coon never said they were subbs, so I don't know why your comments are directed at him. And I agree with curecat, current evidence points towards subbs, and you are offering no reason that they are not.

The title of the thread by coon was:

Quote:
possible Subbs?

He posted the thread and the images which in the first picture appear to be zonate, but other shrooms can similar bands of colors at times. His are not subbs as he asked in his thread title.

And that is what i posted in a response to the threads title/

I know not everyone can go out an buy digital camera for the purpose of taking pictures of mushrooms. But your images are extremely difficult to work with. You could potentially attain better images using a scanner. Additionally you may need to fine tune your spore printing technique so as to obtain thicker deposits. Follow the advice given by Xmush, this alone will eliminate any ambiguity with regard to identification.
At this point it would be difficult to make a definitive pronouncement regarding identity and any such affirmation should be considered conjecture.
Wood chips are not the typical habitat of subbalteatus and they do not colonize and fruit from such a medium insofar as anyone has observed. That said, this ubiquitous landscaping element is occasionally used to mulch rich composted soil containing manure and or other favorable fertilizers. Based on the presence of wood chips we can’t automatically assume your mushrooms are lignicolous and thus not subbalteatus. I found subbs in Chicago’s Grant Park just last summer appearing to grow from woodchips. They were obviously taking advantage of the well fertilized / irrigated soil below and were fruiting despite the proximity of this inhospitable woody material.

Good luck!!!

The woodchips aren't helping this ID but it's definitely not beyond the realm of possibility that they could be subbs.

The environment they are present in could possibly support subbs. IMO.
what else comprised that mound they were growing in? dig a few inches into it if you have to. cuz it looks a bit like stable waste ive searched in for subbs. and i seem to find occasionally woodchips in those too.

mj, the thread was started by wickedferret. They are his pictures, he asked if they were subbs. These are the types of small mistakes that you continuously make that make it difficult to trust your more serious advice.

And let me get this straight, in your reasoning for why they aren't subbs, you say that the images in the first picture appear to show a zonate pattern (as subbs often do), but that other mushrooms can show similar bands of color at times. Therefore these aren't subbs? You don't have to have taken a logic course to know that this is flawed reasoning. We already know that you don't think these are subbs, but we would like some real clarification. You probably know more about subbs than anyone here, yet just taking your word for it is counter to the whole philosphy behind a discussion forum.

more importantly he wants me to know they are not subbs and as far as I know I never said they were, for all I know they are pterodactyl eggs.

YYOu cure cat, I really do not have to explain anything. Think what you want to.

Subbs grow in topsoil in the pnw in January and February as in this image from the mj site.

There are wood chips in the garden, but the subbs are growing from the topsoil and the fertilizers used in the topsoil from the Hay compost used with hickory nuts. And I am not going to go in that.

That's fine, no one really has to explain anything unless they want people to understand and believe what they are saying.

I do not think what I want. I think about things on the basis of logic. If i thought whatever I wanted to, I would believe in an after life.

So basically, we all agree that if the mushrooms ferret posted are subbs, than they should be growing from a substrate beneath the wood chips.
Which means they could still be subbs.
