97% Sure these are Gymnopilus spectabilis

Sorry about the quality of the pics, turns out I have a crap camera (or just don't know how to use it!!)

They were growing on a NZ native hardwood called Pohutukawa.

They were growing in clumps, have a rusty orange spore print and a very bitter taste



I even picked a few for a potential bioassay. The largest is about 15cm across, but from what I've just read I should've picked all the pins!!

Did you see any green discolouration near the base or on the cap? The aborted pins tend to turn very green as well.

The green colour would be a good sign that it is active, though large specimens of G. junonius (syn: G. spectabilis) often do not show any greening.

Here is an example of green bruising at the base of G. luteofolius, a related active Gymnopilus species.

big gym pin with some greening.
they dont always blue/green.

I say, to confirm your ID, look for some pins with green bruising like in the photos coon and i posted.

and B ) are they active?

...... Okay man look.

If they are G. junonius (syn: G. spectabilis), then they are active.

If there is green bruising on any of the pins or other specimens, than they are likely G. junonius.

That is really the easiest way to make sure they are active.
We cannot give a positive ID because we cannot see the green colour in your photos, you will have to look carefully at your collection.
