Gymnopilus spectabilis & Gymnopilus luteofolius
    #863839 - 09/04/02 04:54 PM (19 years, 28 days ago)

Well i just typed my whole post and lost it because i pressed continue without having put a name on the topic post so i lost it all.

Basically, southwest Florida is in a mushroomy cloud of too many mushrooms. So many mushrooms i had been in a cow field and there were too many mushrooms to even be out there.

Anywho, here we have two seperate species of Gymnopilus.

The first pictured here,
Gymnopilus spectabilis,
Growing from the stump of a chopped down palm tree.
In downtown sarasota near the suntrust building.

-Now, spectabilis is not on the listing of known Shrooms in Florida (according to mjshroomer/gartz/guzman?s data).
But i believe the above pictured is indeed the big laughing jim mushroom.

Second, we have the cousin mushroom,
Gymnopilus luteofolius.
Fruiting from mulched flower beds,
At the sarasota public library.

Gymnopilus luteofolius.

Now, i just don?t know how else to say this but there we?re just "too many" mushrooms growing all week long.
Literally growing everywhere.

Also i had been in a cow pasture earlier this week and
Came across a few tree branches with an estimated 40 pounds
of Gymnopilus spectabilis growing from them.

...literally, just so many mushrooms,
everywhere, i just couldn?t believe it.

Enjoy these images,

Keep shroomin,
GGreatOne234

I myself have just picked a nice amount  of these sluts from the mountains.
The difference are small between em aint they?
Are both active because my ones look like the second pics, also stain a blue/purple/green when bruised.

Hello dogkisser,

The G. spectabilis are indeed active,
But they do not stain blue, blue/green, green or any of the above.
-I have never ingested this mushroom myself.
AAnd yes, the differences between the two can be,
Small i guess

The latter mushroom G. luteofolius,
Is too, also a psychoactive mushroom,
Of which i have ingested on several occassions.
Luteofolius caps do not bruise blue from handling,
But they do form blue-blue/green splotches of color,
On their caps..
Also, luteofolius mushrooms tend to be much more
Colorful and have roughened "scales" on the surface
Of their caps.
As adolescent G. lute's, when the weather and enviroment
Is correct, the adolescent young caps are a magnificent
Purple color.

.. The spectabilis on the other hand i do not yet have much
First hand experience with this mushroom,
This is the first year i believe i have come across the laughing jims...

Keep shroomin,
GG

Right,
I must have lutes, i meant to say splotches and not actual bruising. Purpley colored splotches. Are they good?
How many did you consume?

Hey GG...

Nice pics and find! Mushies ARE popping up all over the place, due
to the regular rain we have had. I too spotted some Gymnopilus Luteofolius
next to the Bank One building. Didn't have my camera, so no pics. Hope
the "dust" has settled in your life, and you are in the sunshine once again.

Peace to You

Peaceful Nomad

Hey GG I think that it is very important to not make a blanket statement, such as "they do not stain blue, blue/green, green or any of the above." This is simply not true. Maybe your specimens which you have found in Florida did not appear to stain, but the ones I find here in Canada do stain blueish/greenish, almost never heavily but certainly it is noticable. One of the tests they do at some poison control centers is ask someone who has eaten one to cook a little piece in a frying pan, if it turns greenish, then they have mistakenly eaten a big Gym. Many people confuse this mushroom with the honey mushroom...Allthough I don't really see too many similarities between the two...maybe under certain lighting, with my left eye closed and the other squinting...hehe...but that is another story alltogether.

Anyways nice pics GG...can't wait until my Gyms start popping up...they are a lot of fun.

Cheers

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

Same here in KY
Ggreatone had me thinking i must be color blind or somet.
They definetly have blue/green/purple patches on the skin.
Anyone tripped with em before?? dosage? effects?
Do they grow in the UK?
so many questions, so many answers.

Hi StInvetroThomas,

I dunno man, LLike i typed in a previous reply,
I have very little experience with the Laughing Jim mushroom.
-I do not plan on bioassaying this species (Gymnopilus spectabilis..).
AALso, I tend to just talk Florida mushrooms, because that is where i Shroom and i do not studdy much other than florida mushroom.

Have fun.

Hello again dogkisser,

And thanks every one for the input/replies to my picture/post.

Dogkisser,
Yes, the Gymnopilus luteofolius are a very colorful mushroom.

Yes, I have indeed tripped on them before, a few times.
One time they really worked good though.
I ate only the smaller lute's, and also i ate
Only the ones which had blue - blue/green color on the caps.
-i must have eaten...probably 2-3 ounces of them in their freshly picked state..
?? I am guesstimating the weight of 2-3oz.
-But i remember eating a whole lot of them that night.
The effects i would describe as "unique and woody tasting".
I am not certain about what Gym's can be found in the United Kingdom.

Good luck man,
GG

Just wanna say, Nice post and pics man.
Do you have any idea on how many whole bitches you ate?
I have no scales and have heard large quantities need to be had but am uncertain.
Mine are a nearly dried from todays sun. (couple of ziplock bags full)

They have intrigued me somewhat because i have never before come across em let alone pick the little beauts.  :smirk:

Color blind? What?
I never told you that they didn't bruise.. I just said I didn't think they'd be growing currently due to weather conditions.

No. Sounds like you may have found poisonous Hypholoma fasciculare. In the future start your own thread instead of pulling out seven year old ones.

Yea be careful what you eat.  The middle one looks similar to a Pluteus.  But not worth eating.  Cool finds welcome to the shroomery.
