Gymnopilus spectabilis
    #1982254 - 10/05/03 10:10 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Hello everyone. This is a thread based on the mushroom Gymnopilus spectabilis, it's edibility, dosage, etc...

After reading about the mushroom which I think I've seen growing locally around me, I still know a suprisingly small ammount... of course, I am a little apprehensive about eating a mushroom I know little about... so let's share some knowlage here...

http://www.cx.sakura.ne.jp/~kinoko/01eng/gymnopilus_spectabilis.htm

If you will read the above article, you will note that it says the mushroom is poisonous. Local hunters have informed me that it's a good shroom, active as a magic mushroom... so is poison a codename for 'don't eat this, it will make you trip', or does it contain other toxins which I should be warry about? I began thinking it was a good shroom, but after you see it labled poisonous, you become veryyyyy cautious...

If it is edible, what is the dosage required for a level 2-3 trip?
(200 pound male as example).

I have also read this, which is very informitive: http://www.mushroomjohn.com/species9.htm

But still doesn't specify a real dosage... don't wanna underdo it or overdo it...

Thanks for reading this post, and I would highly appreciate some help

>so is poison a codename for 'don't eat this, it will make you trip', or does it contain other toxins which I should be warry about?

In this case, yes, poison would be codename for hallucinogenic. It really depends on the book you're using, some don't like to tell people that mushrooms are hallucinogenic.

Mind you, most mushrooms listed as poisonous really means they're poisonous. Poisonous mushrooms can cause varying degress of illness from nausea and sweating to vomiting violently and bloody diarreha... sometimes death.

Ok. That's what I figured. Thanks for that info.

Next thing, dosage. Mitchnast, you picked these type of shrooms, so if you are reading this maybe you could help.

Or anyone?

Dosage?

I got terrible heart burn... and the next day, after taste is horrible... Good luck... no find um..

My current avatar are the G. spectabilis I found and am speaking of... Give Mitchnast a PM.. he'll let you know.. what to do.. spader

I went out and picked what I am assuming is Big Gym...

But there is a conflict..

http://www.mushroomjohn.com/species9.htm
Is john's decription...

Mitchnast describes them as

rusty orange sporeprint, viscid removable opaque pellicle
no ring visable, growing on decidious treestump.
wet weather, low temps.
cap is smooth with slight scaling

on this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1

I will try to describe what I have here.

4 Specimens
Width: (6-8 cm, no more no less), Thickness (1-2 cm)
Flat, edges uplifted.
1 specimen Umbande
3 specimens Umbilicle
They are viscid, and smooth
Cinnamon Brown, Slightly lighter cinnamon colour along edges. Damaged ones are lighter brown on top. Some seem darker in the middle...
Gills are dirty brown on dirty, wet specimens (2 maybe 3), the better specimens have light yellowish brown gills.
Stems short, three of them are 1 cm long, the other better specimen is 2 cm. Whitish grrayish...
Gills close together
Light metallic smell.
Light bitter taste.

2 were on a rotting stump, probally hardwood, 2 were picked from mossy ground. This was all after 3 days of heavy rain, and a 5 hour no rain period.

Pics coming later, hopefully.

Gymnopilus species in general are orangish everywhere. So if your mushrooms aren't then they're probably Pholiotas, especially if they're slimy. The two genera resemble each other, but Gymnopilus are generally dry and smooth capped, where Pholiotas are usually either slimy or scaly capped.

A spore print will also help to separate them. Pholiotas have medium brown to somewhat rusty brown spore prints. Gymnopilus tend to have brighter, more orangish spore prints.

There are a few edible Pholiotas, and a few that are considered poisonous. Most of them are unknown.

Happy mushrooming!

If you are talking about the Pholiotas like on this site:

http://www.uoguelph.ca/~gbarron/species.htm

They look nothing like em... I should have a pic up in 2 hours, if not, tommorow.

This page has a few more photos which show some of the smooth, slimy capped Pholiotas:

http://www.ne.jp/asahi/mushroom/tokyo/Pholiota.html

I don't have a copy of Smith and Hesler's monograph on Pholiota. Accurate identification to species for most of them requires a microscope.

Happy mushrooming!

After comparing the image with the mushrooms, you identified it almost dead on.

Looks like the one in the upper left of this picture
http://www.ne.jp/asahi/mushroom/tokyo/Pholiota/pho-sp4.jpg

Similar to these:

Thank you very much, I am just a newbie starting off and I thought I had something special here... I?ll keep on trying though, and next time I?ll have pictures for sure.

The really laughing gym?s are below... I got mixed up.

I warn you Laughing gyms can be easily confused with other dangerous mushrooms like Jack O' Lantern Mushroom. My advice against eating these mushrooms unless you know for certain to a absolute degree of what they are.

gymnopilus isn't hard to id to genus if you learn what to look for. it's iding to species that becomes tricky. i have no knowlege of any toxic gyms with the exclusion of those growing in an area with toxins in the ground-water table. many mushrooms will concentrate environmental toxins like pesticides and industrial wastes.

whatever you do decide to do, don't try to amke an id that is beyond your ability if you have consumption in mind. learn how to make your own ids first.

good luck,
be safe and
happy hunting.

peace,
concrete.
