Sacred Blue Gym from Ohio

[Edit] I originally identified these as G. spectabilis, now I'm not sure.

They'er back!!!

A few days of rain last week, and a few nights below 60 degrees was all it took.




Note the blue staining on the pins. These started to turn blue as soon as they were picked. This Photo was taken about one hour later.



Happy days are here again in Ohio. :cool:

Wicked looking pins, man.  I wish you had some habitat photos- I love habitat photos for gyms.  That's some pretty apparent blueing.  Very nice find you sly dog you.  Just went on an hour drive yesterday to find the sacred gym. :bow:  Were those found on stumps, live trees, or mulch deposits?  God I love gyms.  They're cute as a puppy, but not quite as cute as a bdsm picture.  Still good though----yeah...

I'll try to get some habitat pictures later this week. There are a few more places that I'm sure are producing now. I didn't have the camera with me today.

Hm....yeah...nice pictures..

hey i don't think those are G. spectabilis.
-they must be something else..

G. spectabilis (i do not believe) stain blue or blue/green at all..really..
-none of my books mention anything about them bluing.

the thing thats throwing me off is the veils on those,,definately a persistant veil..

i might suggest these other species of Gymnopilus (psychoactive ones);
G. aeruginosus (recorded to grow in OH; stains blue)
G. validipes (does not stain blue)
G. braendlei (cap stains green)
G. intermedius (i have no info on this species)\
G luteoviridis (whole mushroom stains greenish, not blue though)
G. viridans (caps sometimes stains green with spots)

ok so now you can elimate some of those species which stain green, because yours clearly stain blue.

now we have these possibilities;
G. aeruginosus
G. intermedius

and since G. aeruginosus is known to grow in Ohio, than, that's probably what you are finding.

I dunno, these gymnopilus still confuse me i could be wrong

but i do not think that G. spectabilis stains blue at-all.

Here are a couple more photos of the same collection.




The caps are starting to change blue after drying out a little. Spore prints are done. This looks like my best collection ever. I will be making tea soon; I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Now, what species are these?

David Arora's key to Gymnopilus in "Mushrooms Demystified" indicates G. aeruginosus using only two steps: "bruisng blue" and "Cap with fibrils or scales, veil present at least when young."

However, the mushrooms I found don't look anything like these.

1)The Sporeworks G. aeruginosus have caps that go from flat to concave; these start out convex and sometimes get flat when they are old and big, but I have never seen them bend their margins up like that.

2)The Sporeworks G. aeruginosus start very dark as pins and lighten in color as they mature; the opposite is true with this collection. They begin bright yellow and eventually turn brownish-orange when they get big.

3) G. aeruginosus is reported to grow on wood chips; these are found growing on rotten logs. This habitat is typical.


(The half eaten orange mushroom next to the white oyster is the species in question. Sorry this isn't prettier, but it should give Ohioans an Idea of where to look.)


The mushrooms above were all collected in the pin/button stage. Hence the lighter collor and blueing reaction. Larger more mature specimens from the same logs are orange and do not stain blue at all, even upon drying. They are also much less potent. When I first found the two logs from which these were collected, the mushrooms were more mature, and none had any blue at all. I identified them as G. spectabilis.

Only on later collections from the same logs did I notice that the pins turned blue. Hence my conclusion: Big Laughing Gyms sometimes bruise blue when they are young.

I can't seem to find photos of the other possible species that you mentioned GG, but if I had to guesse I would say that this is not G. aeruginosus. It may be one of the other active species, or a may be a strain of G. spectabilis which is potent and bluises blue when young. What ever they are, they live on rotten logs in Ohio and are quite good if you can find them before or shortly after the veils break.

None of my books say anything about spectabilis bruising blue, for some reason; i don't know i have never picked spectabilis before.

In mushrooms demystified it says nothing about spectabilis bluing, but it does tell the story about a ohio women eating them..

And it says nothing about spectabilis bluing in that book by Thomas Laessoe's either, and his spectabilis is actually described as Gymnopilus junonius

And the truth lies in the monograph "North American Species of Gymnopilus" by L. R. Hesler, which is the granddaddy of all Gymnopilus books; :smile: these mushrooms can be hard to disyfer

according to all the literature i've read on G. spectabilis, i can find no reference to them bruising blue except in at least one very questionable field quide in which it was the only gymnopilus species mentioned. i further support my conclusion by the fact that bruising blue seperates G. aerunisosus and G. punctifolius from all other western Gymnopilus species in arora's keys, including G. spectabilis [very common in the west and dispite much speculative literature to the contrary, just as likely to be active as anywhere else i know].

Concrete feet is very correct about the non bluing reactions of G. spectabilis. While a few have found small amounts of psilocybine in this particular Gymnopilus species, IT is the only known one of 13 known Gymnopilus mushrooms which contain a small amount of the alkaloids, psilocine and psilocyhbine, the primary active ingredients in G. spectabilis are kavalactones similar to those found in Kava, yangonine and noryangonine.

This herb, a member of the pepper family, grows as a bush in the South Pacific. Explorer Captain James Cook, who gave this plant the botanical name of "intoxicating pepper", first discovered kava kava. Kava has been used for over 3,000 years for its medicinal effects as a sedative, muscle relaxant, diuretic, and as a remedy for nervousness and insomnia.
The botanical has been used in parts of the Pacific at traditional social gatherings as a relaxant and in cultural and religious ceremonies to achieve a higher level of consciousness. The roots can be made into a mildly narcotic beverage that is comparable to popular cocktails in our culture. In Germany, Kava kava is used as a nonprescription drug to reduce anxiety. Kava was first mentioned in scientific records in 1886, and it is gaining popularity in the US for its relaxing effects.

More recently, Kava kava has also gained popularity with the natives of Hawaii, Australia and New Guinea where it is used medicinally as well as recreationally. Kava also is effective as a pain reliever and can be used instead of aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Recent clinical studies have shown that the herb kava is a safe nonaddictive anti-anxiety medicine, and as effective as prescription anxiety agents containing benzodiazepines such as valium. While benzodiazepines tend to promote lethargy and mental impairment, kava has been shown to improve concentration, memory, and reaction time for people suffering from anxiety. Kava has been clinically demonstrated as a means of achieving a state of relaxation without the adverse side effects.

Several rhizome components and lactones have been isolated in the kava root. Of the fifteen lactones isolated from kava, there are six major lactones (kavalactones) known to provide psychoactive activity: kawain, methysticin, demethoxy-yangonin, dihydrokawain, dihydomethysicin, and yongonin. All kavalactones are physiologically active, though it is the fat-soluble kavalactones derived from kava resin that have the greatest effect on the central nervous system. Kava also has a direct effect on muscle tension similar to tranquilizers. The activity of the kava rhizome is related to several arylethylene pyrones similar in structure to myristicin, which is found in nutmeg.

So, everyone seems to agree that these are not G. spectabilis, and i'm sure you are all right.

Could this be a new species? Does that mean i get to name it like OuchITripped said?

I found some more today. These were the last two on a log full of rotten ones. They are at full maturity.





















They may not be G. spectabilis, but I don't think they G. aeruginosus.

Anybody have a picture of  G. punctifolius?

I must say though, from experience, kava kava is not as benzodiazepines in anxiety relief. Kind of off-topic but who cares?

big laughing gyms both do and don't stain blue, depending on the patch and habitat... either way they are still big laughing gyms, still make you giggle. here in the poconos we don't get them till september... but they come up in troves. they are best while the margin is still incurved. their veil is between evanscent and persistant, depends on their age and how much rain they have been exposed to. peace.

Those are exactly like the woodchip lovers I am finding- they are wavy (extremely) and upturned almost and with profound discoloration (from light beige to dark orange-red). without any trace of a veil from constant weater/rain/whatever. Huge mushrooms in clusters tightly grouped at the base. Bruise everywhere they are heavily damaged and with blue pins and mycelium. Look just like that.

There are some active species in the Gymnopilus genus. There are probably around 20 mushrooms in the Gymnopilus genus, probably 5-10 of them are active.
