How to identify mushroom poisoning
    #1949077 - 09/24/03 08:25 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Ok, you or a friend has eaten bad mushrooms, you diddn't listen at the the shroomery and thought perhaps you don't belong because people shoot down most of your posts because you make assumptions, you dont like being lectured, you just wanna get high.  You diddn't research it and sampled some mushroom you found.
Now its two days later and you feel flustered when you get home from a party where there was drinking, youre tired, you go take a piss, but something is wrong, your piss is so dark, and now that you look youre skin is getting patches of yellow. within a few hours youre feeling cramps, within a few more its a ripping burning sensation in your guts.

now youre really worried, what does it feel like to die? Is this it or just a minor toxication? should you call 911 and embarrass your family and yourself? perhaps riding it out would be wise, after all people eat mushrooms all the time and hardly ever die right? wrong.
people die from mushrooms all the time.  theres actually a case at a scandinavian shool where a teacher accidently poisoned and killed over 20 children with mushroom sandwhiches.

some of the most common types of mushroom poisoning

:alert: :alert: muscarine (clitocybe, inocybe)
_______________________________________
sweating, blurred vision, confusion, abdominal cramps, the feeling that blood is struggling to circulate, pounding heart, head ache (simmilar to ocean surge crashing upon your brain)
muscarine is rarely fatal and symptoms usually subside completely in 24 hours.  if one were to eat an ammount of mushrooms of this nature in the hopes on a trip, one has probably consumed less than a fatal dosage.  breathing may become dificult.
death usually occurs from respiratory failure.

effects of poisoning hit about as quickly as psilocybin.

the antidote is atropine.

:alert: :alert: :alert: amanitoxin (phallotoxin amanitin)
amanitas, galerenas, conocybes, lepiotas.
___________________________________________________

certainly every mushroom hunter should know this one, half of all people who become poisoned with this die.
symptoms usually begin after a few days of asymptomatic incubation.
basically the chemicals are absorbed into your bloodstream, then they are filtered out by your liver, now before they got to your liver, they did cellular damage all over your body, but you don't notice this, just like you don't notice how your liver and kidneys are beggining to wear out while trying to pass this stuff, in self-preservation your liver excretes the cocktail of deadly toxins and liver waste back into your bloodstream.
here at about t+3 0r 4 days, after HUGE permanent ammounts of damage are done, you notice the first  symptoms, and they are horriffic.
first there is the reglular cramps one gets when one has the shits, but by the time you're in the bathroom, you've also got nausea, your throat tightens up, your head gets hot, your mouth gets salty, then about 1 second later you start vommiting hard.  you are probably on the toilet now shitting blood and vomiting in a bucket (if you were lucky enough to have one)
now when people get sick, they seldom try to wonder why WHILE they are throwing up. and chances are youre going to die weather you seek help or not.
when youre THIS sick of course, no matter why, you should call 911, this is NOT a flu, this is what happens when people are about to die.

It's not ALWAYS this bad, the diareah might not be very bloddy, the nausea might have breaks, etc.

now heres where the mushroom gets really deadly.

you get to the hospital, or maybe you stay at home and wait it out.
after an entire 24 hours of intense illnes, you recover, you're still tired and weak. a hospital may release you at this point, or you may go on with your life and think of it all as a stomach flu or food poisoning.

now all that poison excreted into your bloodstream goes back into the liver and kidneys for cleaning, the overloaded liver and kidneys fail.
your skin and eyes turn yellow, you begin vommitng and shitting again, evrything is bloody, your head spins and throbs, everything goes black,
you fall into a coma, you're dead within a week of that, without massive hospitalization and a liver and kydney transplant.

dont let pride keep you from seeking professional help, tell the doctor everything.

If treated before symptoms begin you stand a good chance of surviving, the blood can be clensed and the toxins mostly removed so the shock wont be so bad.

surviving the second attack doesnt mean you wont have a 3rd and 4th.

amanitoxins are bicyclic octopeptides, meaning they go through you twice, but that's only because the second time around is usually anough to kill you, they cycle as many times as it takes.

there is no antidote.

:alert: :alert: Gyromitrin (false morelles, uncooked morels)
(Monomethylhydrazine Poisoning)
_______________________________________________

the novice morel hunter should be aware of this one.

this poison is not unlike eating a donut that fell in a puddle of jet fuel.

this toxin is actually an ingrediant of rocket fuel and very volitile.
consuming it leads to kidney and liver failure, although not usually as bad as with amanitoxins and not bicyclic.  to it's basically like the first stage of death cap poisoning.

this toxin will also give you cancer worse than smoking for 20 years even if you DON'T feel the inital toxication.

there is no antidote

:alert: :alert: Orellanine (cortinaruis mushrooms)
______________________________________

heres one that sneaks up on to, poisoning isnt felt for 2-3 weeks
the syptoms are chills, dehydration, loss of appitite, and vommiting.
death may occur due to progressive kydney failure.
or recovery may take place.

there is no cure or effective treatment for the poisoning.

:alert: :alert: Paxillus involatus (poison paxillus)
____________________________________________

this mushroom is generally not cosidered acutely toxic, it however is a carcinogen causing hemolytic anemia in people who eat it over time.

symptoms are simmilar to leukemia. and it does not respond to treatment.

:alert: Muscimol, Ibotenic Acid (Amanita muscaria, panterina, some Tricholoma)
____________________________________________________________________

this poisoning it often sought by enthogen enthusiasts.
it is seldom fatal in most dosages but almost always causes profuse sweating, drooling, fatigue.
other symptoms include vommiting (a given) blurred vision, (and if youre lucky) euphoric sensation and hallucinations.

:alert: Gastrointestinal irritants (probably most mushrooms)
________________________________________________________

many mushrooms have the capacity to irritate the stomach lining and cause digestive failure.
even many edible mushrooms when improperly prepaired.
even psylocybian mushrooms
its not life threatening of even harmful, but it is very uncomfortable, to substantialize it, i would have to say its the shits.
but its also the pukes and the cramps.

it takes affect in about a half hour from ingestion, and lasts till youve shit and puked yourself inide out.

Lepista nuda (and other blewitts)
_________________________________

chances are you can eat and enjoy this mushroom, i know a man who ate one and it burned his throat out.
one sould always sample a small amount or touch the mushroom to a pinprick and wait a minute to see if there is an allergic reaction.

this mushroom has been know to cause Anaphylaxic shock and many people, normal symptoms are hives, swelling, basic allergy stuff, in minor cases an antihystamine might help, in severe cases, adrenalin.

Coprine, (coprinus, inky caps) (simmilar effects with certain clitocybes, no coprine present, simmilar chems)
______________________________________________________

turns acetaldehyde into acetic acid like water helps oxygen turn iron into rust, not a bad thing really, it can mess with your bodies PH about as badly as eating pickled eggs. not a big deal but this is definately not bar food.
the consumation of ehtynol (booze, beer, hooch, sweet mothers milk, wine, brine, shine... wait, thats not ehtynol... but still)
causes the body to buld up acetaldehyde which must be slowly metabolized, unfortuneately, coprine acts as a catylist basically hitting your system with a wave of pickled eggs straight to the blood.

the effects? reddening of the face, sweating, dizziness, basically the same effects you get from eating 12 pickled eggs before going to the bar, (for days afterwards)

if the mushroom is consumed first, the coprine catylist is in place for days to cause complications from alcohol.
if the alcohol is consumed first, the body will have a acetaldehyde surplus which can be a problem if coprine is introduced as a catylist.

summary, no inky caps within a week before or after drinking.

those are the main ones, feel free to add to the list, please do not wreck this thread with insanity.

Very nice. If you don't mind, I'll take that, correct the typos, and update the FAQ with it.

Great post Mitch.

Toxicman: Perhaps add this to the FAQ too...

American Association of Poison Control Centers

??????????????????????????????????

If you have a poisoning emergency, call
1-800-222-1222.

If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call 911.

Excellent post! Very informative. Anyone here ever have a case of mushroom posioning (other than amanita muscaria)?

--------------------
The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.
