They look like they have some potential, hang on to them and see what others say... I think you might have a winner. Don't eat them untill you have other's opinons and a spore print. There are some poisonous look alikes that could make you really sick. Spore print should be rusty orange to bright orange.

They might be, but they don't look quite the same as the ones I find here in PA. Gyms seem to vary by area, at least that's what I'm sure I have read. What type of tree were they growing from? I usually find them on well rotted oak or maple stumps or logs, but they can grow on several species of deciduous hard woods.

I believe they are, they have that spectabilis look, yellew flesh....yup. They should smell almost like anise/wood and drop an orange/brown sporeprint.

They were growing at the bottom of an oak tree.

They certainly look similar.
Gymnopilus spectabilis has a prominent ring on the stem, so please verify that yours do, too (I can't see from the photos). Here is a photo of some showing the ring.
You should also verify the taste (break a piece off from a cap smaller than a fingernail, put it in your mouth, chew for up to a minute, and spit it out - you can stop chewing if you taste something). G. spectabilis is bitter. There is a closely related species which tastes mild to disagreeable but not intensely bitter.
Finally, you should verify if they were growing on conifer wood or hardwood. G. spectabilis only grows on hardwood.
Keep us posted.
Happy mushrooming!

I posted a print pic if anyone is interested. I also tasted a little tiny peice and it tastes almost identicaly like fresh psilocybe. So, i'm guessing that would be 'bitter'.
Thanks again for all your help.
peace.

Defenitly gyms. Take a look at the one on the left in the next pic, you even cut it the same way. Also check the other recent threads about gyms, it seems they are poping up all over, i saw the first of this year last week in my woods .
