Karma & Kompassion
    #6770749 -

I have heard proponents of karma speak about feeling kompassion for those sick or injured or in some other bad way. 'Let's pray for them' or 'let's send them good vibes' or 'let's take up a collection'...

Which is it? If someone 'deserves' their fate why should we help or care? Our helping them will not clear their karma.

Perhaps karma proponents do not believe their own spiel.

I highly doubt that anyone who believes in Karma has thought out a consistent philosophy starting with axioms.

Or perhaps you do not fully understand karma. Neither do I.

But Karma is certainly not predestination or unalterable fate. Imagine a field. That field is the life of a being. Every intentional action affects the field, either by planting a seed, helping a seed or a plant grow, or making a seed or plant wither away. Because of fundamental misunderstanding, unwholesome seeds and plants are nourished throughout the day and night. Eventually, some plants will ripen and bear fruit, either wholesome or unwholesome....good or bad. This continues until eventually one arrives at a right understanding.

Compassion is not pity for the state of others, but rather arises with the realization that we are not separate from others, and that as another suffers, so we suffer.

This is, at least, my cursory understanding of the subject. Here's a passage from Shakyamuni:

Quote:
If it is true that a man must reap according to his deeds, in that case there is no religious life, nor is any opportunity afforded fro the complete extinction of suffering. But if the reward a man reaps accords with his deeds, in that case there is a religious life and opportunity is afforded for the complete extinction of suffering. And what kind of individual would it be whose pain-producing actions, however slight, bring him to a hellsih state? Whenever an individual is not proficient in the management of his body, is not proficient in the precepts, is not proficient in concentration, is not proficient in wisdom, is limited and bounded and abides in what is finite and evil: that is the sort of individual whose pain-producing actions, however slight, would bring him to a hellish state.

Said the Buddha: The ignorant cling to names, ideas, and signs, their minds move along these channels. As thus they move along, they feed on multiplicities of objects and fall into the notion of an ego-soul and what belongs to it, and cling to appearances. As thus they cling, there is a reversion to ignorance, and they become tainted; karma born of greed, anger, and folly is accumulated. As karma is accumulated again and again, their minds become swathed in the cocoon of discrimination as the silk-worm; and, transmigrating in the ocean of birth-and-death*, they are unable, like the water-drawing wheel, to move forward. And because of folly they do not understand that all things are like maya, a mirage, the moon in water, and have no self-substance to be imagined as an ego-soul and its belongings; that things rise from their false discrimination; that they are devoid of qualified and qualifying, and have nothing to do with the course of birth, abiding, and destruction; that they are born of the discrimination of what is only seen of the Mind itself; and assert that they are born of...time, atoms, or a supreme spirit, for they follow names and appearances. The ignorant move along with appearances.

* This part of the translation is questionable, as transmigration implies an abiding entity, which the same mean taught did not exist.

I agree. I don't really belive in reincarnation but your description of karma for this one life are right on IMO. Same for your concept of compassion.

This is why you help people to a path through which they can be free of afflictions, etc, that cause karmic maturation. Anyone who is free form that, just like freed from prison, will automatically have compassion for those who are not free from that prison of dualism and ignorance.

But Im with ya'll suckers!!! Lets roast these godamn buddhists alive :jesus::evil:

So karma is a group function because we are all one. Therefore if I am totally evil and do whatever I want to, my effect on the human race will be neglible (1/6,500,000,000 of total karmic points).

So, it's only for betterment of their own karma
No, because one may give somebody a chance to better one's karma himself, by helping him, too. Not nescessarily, of course. But else he could surely fail (by death, for example).

Is this the same maturation that makes one retaliate because another fails to agree?

I am far from free from karma yet because of that I feel compassion for others dealing with their karma.

In your case my compassion looks like tough love as you have a hard shell to break through.

If you deal with your karma first, it will automatically well be in relation to your dealing with theres. Remember that word again, ummmm 'interdependence'? Walking the path, and interacting with beings places causes for them, as they interact with you. When you are free, you can interact in many more ways, did you remember that thread in the other forum, about experiencing many lives simultaneously? But upon death, like a bird from an egg, will fly into the sky, and get eaten by a bigger bird!

Nope that circumstance would be karmic, but if your on the path, doesn't necessarily mean that you are automatically freed. It takes time to thoroughly apply the antidotes, and transform our emotions into wisdom, etc.

karma is just a universal law, it is also dogma. it is what you make of it.
