I wouldn't exactly call it fanaticism, it's just appreciating something wise ( not only Castaneda but other wise people as well ) and discussing on their point of views.... I see nothing wrong with that.

Is this some double meaning, or why couldn't it be on your right, behind, in front, above, beneath or even within ??

what i get from it is this: traditionally when a king sits next to his queen she always sits to his right. therefore, that would make us the queen (or lesser power) and death, the king. and the queen always confides in her king...and vice versa.

hmmmmmm....does death confide in us???

Castaneda said some pretty strange, nonsensical things, as well as very wise and intuitive things. All in all, a mixed bag of tricks.

I'm pretty sure my death is on my back left, between my spine and my shoulder blade; couldn't tell you why though.  :shrug:

Essentially, it is, but it has been practically useful to me to think of it this way.  I don't really mean my physical death so much, I guess, but I notice it is a point that contains a tremendous amount of energy; when for example I'm in certain positions in my asanas that point can be really painful, and the release of energy that comes with exhalation and un-tightening the muscle is fantastic.  Perhaps I equate it with death because I came aware of the importance of this particular point in my body's energy system after reading a Castaneda quote about one's death being at one's left.

Right. I try really hard to take an active role in the unfoldment of my reality without using beliefs as a fall-back or as a means forward. Many of my superstitions have been catalysts for social growth and spiritual progress, but I am beginning to get ahead of them, so to speak...

the poetry of this "on your left, make friends with it"
makes sense as follows:
the left is your non-usual side
the non-usual is not-habit... habit is mechanical, awareness is asleep when you are immersed in habit
being open to that which is not just habit (i.e. the left side)
is essential if you want to see.

DOn Juan talks about death to wake up his student who is afraid of death.
this is not about death, and it is not about your left side, it is metaphorical about real magic or seeing which needs one to transcend habit with awareness.

see it is simple

while the codex is less ordinal than buddhism with it's 8fold path and 4noble truths etc.etc.etc. getting past the words is just the first step to acutally doing somethng sustainable in life.

Great post, RGV, I really appreciate it.

I have found that 'activating' the left side of my body has had tangible effect in balancing all my energies. I've been practicing basketball more with my left hand and left side of my body, doing some left-handed writing, exercising, etc. For some reason the phrase 'Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing' has been stuck in my head for awhile, though I can't remember where I pulled it from. It seems to me that the left and right sides of my body do have really distinct traits that are converging in yoga.

Thanks redgreen, that makes some sense. But then, wouldn't it be better having death on one's right side, for a habit to break ?
Or is death crawling from the left to the right side then ?
And, aren't those damned habits the real death ? For example for creativity and inspiration, therefor reside originally on the right side, in that model ?

I rarely get something 'balanced' out of Castaneda's triple-mirror speak, so for me it's better to throw it over board.
That's what my original answer was all about :wink:
