Mystical or Chemical?

Natural Drugs: Pot, mushrooms, salvia, etc...are they mystical gifts from a greater power, or just poisons that chemically alter your mind into thinking so?

The left-brain says they're nothing more than poisons to your system, I mean this is why they get you high, resulting in an altered outlook, right?. One could argue that your profound insights are just the result of chemical poisoning and that these insights could've been achieved through other means, such as meditation.

On the other hand, I used to do tons of self-analysis via solitary LSD trips after therapy was a wash. It worked great, but it wasn't until my first experience with mushrooms that I experienced complete ego death that drastically changed my life (once I got over the depression that followed). It sure felt magical at the time, but I was 17 and lame song lyrics seemed profound at that age.

So which do you think? Are they "magic", or are they thought of that way simply because a bunch of chemically altered people labeled them as such?

There is no magic, or unicorns, or gnomes.

Although, when tripping hard enough, those things can be fun to stab with silverware.

Part of me says its just chemical, but a larger part of me says that theres something else behind many (but not all) psychedelic experiences. I think the substance itself isn't mystical/spiritual/magical or whatever you want to call it, but more like a key or gateway to something that is.

that's the truth folks. I had a mystical experience reading a michael crichton book in jail once; it was on par with the realizations I've had on mushrooms. it's all in you, not in the drug.

the mushroom trip experience is just too coherent and too perfect to be the random toxic effects of a poison. Its just too perfect.

See, I can't buy that. That's the same logic path that staunch creationists have. I don't think just because something is naturally perfect, it means it's got some greater meaning.

Drugs don't need to be created to be non-toxic. It's believed that drugs like the poppy plant developed opiates to keep animals away. But why is this the only way to look at drugs and evolution??? Maybe poppies wanted to attract animals. I was drawn to the poppy plant even before I tried it.

Ask yourself, where are the seeds, and where is the largest concentration of opiates. It's believed that fruit trees developed tasty fruits to spread their seeds, why are all drugs poisons?

It's bias to say they are, and very narrow. Many of them are non-toxic, so why are fruits a plants attempt at trying to lure us, and drugs are not.
And...
Your poll is also too narrow. No there isn't a creator, BUT plants are often trying to lure us in, they aren't always trying to push us away.

Poison, not toxin. A poison causes "injury, illness, or death to organisms, usually by chemical reaction or other activity on the molecular scale". I'd call the drug-induced altering of normal body chemistry, poisoning. There may be a better term I'm overlooking, though.

Nah, I wasn't aiming at if anyone believes in a creator, higher power, or the seductive qualities of nature. Was just curious as to how many think naturally occuring drugs are supernatural, and how many think they aren't.

i feel the answer is a little of both.

a strictly chemcial substance can open us up to a very mystical experience.

my vote is that it's two sides of the same coin.
