If you just want to play around with Linux, the easiest way is to use a live DVD, which is a complete linux system on a dvd.

For example here you can download an iso file, burn it to a dvd and then start up your computer from that dvd.

This allows you to play with a working linux system without having to install anything. If you like it you can always use the built-in installer. If you do decide to install, make sure to make a backup copy of anything important on the machine, just in case...

I hated Microsoft since they realesed '95

3.11 was a tool not an OS and '95 was a tool built on an OS that was supposed to be an OS.

They should of recoded the whole thing from scratch then because now they've snowballed to this huge shoddy peice of shit that runs like a slug. Fuck Microsoft!!!!

Hey thats pretty fucking sweet man thanks. What do I do after burning the ISO, just reboot the computer up and it'll load or do I have to go into BIOS settings at all?

Just a reboot with the dvd in the drive should work, if it doesn't then you'll have to set the dvd-drive as the first boot device in the BIOS.

Yeah this is pretty cool. I actually got my wireless card to work fine. Just playing around on the DVD right now. I don't see whats so special about linux. It's definitely not great for home use thats for sure.

Alright if I want to install this Ubuntu how would I go about doing it? Originally I thought that I had two separate HD's but after talking with someone I think it's only one physical drive that came partitioned on my laptop. On the sticker on the outside of my lappy it says 80GB PATA HDD but there are two virtual drives (C:\ and D:\ each 35GB).. How would I go about doing this and not fucking my computer up? :lol: I want to be able to choose which operating system runs at start up.

Hi did I mention this before? Choose the operating system that best fits your needs.

For example, if someone can get MATLAB running as smoothly on Linux as you can on XP and I'll be a convert (again)? While you're at it, try SPSS, AMPL, and SIGMA. Linux is severely hampered in this sense -- the corporate office world won't switch anytime soon and we can safely say that Linux is for novelty, those who don't use professional software packages for engineers (or otherwise), high-tech related/IT jobs. Honestly, say you have a project due using software primarily written for Windows on your Linux box. The night before the deadline you run into some compatibility problems in Linux -- do you really want to spend the remainder of the night looking for the fix? I certainly don't. Sure, MS has its gripes but name one product out there that doesn't. It's just a giant with sketchy beginnings and not so smooth operations and there will always be those who love to hate a winner.

It's sort of like, "why run on MacOS"? I used to intern at a design firm and they were all running macs because it was better for graphics supposedly. For most users, WinXP is a fine OS. Honestly I have had more inconvenience running Linux with compatibility problems in both software (mentioned above) and hardware (e.g. I get a sound card to work but I can only get 75% of the features that I pay for to function; the rest I have to scour the net for drivers written by the enthusiast).

WinXP for me. Honestly, if your WinXP is running like shit its time you do some maintenance on it or ditch that pirated copy!

When you are installing it, it gives you a choice of hard drives / partitions to install to. You can pick your main big one, and it will then ask you how big you want the new partition to be. Specify whatever you want.


After all that installs, it will install a grub loader, so at boot time, you can choose Windows XP or ubuntu to start.

It's pretty painless to install, I have ubuntu now, it's tight, I like it, but openSuse has a much purtier boot menu. Oh well, whatever, I like ubuntu better anyway
