Bye Microsoft!
    #6513476 -

Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP... I've never missed an upgrade, I even pay for them. Now with Vista you need a copy of the previous OS installed before you can upgrade, and it also invalidates your old serial. Once they stop updating XP I'm going straight to Linux and never looking back. I'm still on the fence about whether it's 100% ready for desktop use, but it's sure looking better than any of the alternatives. Who's with me? We should start a converter's club.

The only reason I haven't ditched windows completely is that I still like windows for its wireless network manager (Ubuntu sucks with wireless networking...although it works..) and usenet readers.

I know there's a few usenet readers for linux, but they all kind of suck. that and DVD authoring is not nearly as good in Linux (encoding an AVI to a DVD format)

Once I find suitable replacements for those things... I'm gone!

Ive installed linux dozens of times on my PCs, usually with a windows install along side it.. I really support linux, I think what they are doing is totally awesome, but Ive had a hard time switching full time. Im not sure exactly what it is.. Maybe its the long hours of trying to make everything work right.. Maybe its the confusion when things wont compile, and I can't simply download an executable. Or maybe its just not had the same speed as my Win2k that Ive been running for 7 years..

I guess Im just stuck in the old days with computers... I like things sleek, simple, and fast. Never was into all the eye-candy and useless features.. Sure eyecandy is nice, but I already have much time to pause inbetween the computers processes, even multitasking..

I just loaded this laptop w/ some more RAM, so Im thinking of trying Ubuntu again. Would love some suggestions on good programs to use for usenet and torrents.

I have used many many linux distros since Redhat 5.1. The one I use now is Linspire CNR edition and microripoff windows xp. I just upgraded to a 64 bit processor and Linspire doesnt support it :-(. Too bad because I get tons of apps through the CNR library that install easily. Some programs need compiling though sometimes which can be a pain in the butt.
yeah that sucks about Windows Vista though. Theres many many issues with Vista

As soon as I get a bigger HD, I'm gonna dual boot XP/Ubuntu. I fuckin love Ubuntu, and to be honest I have no reason to switch to Vista. What are the selling points for Vista, if any?

So in like...5 years? I think by then Linux will by any criteria be ready for desktop use.

As soon as I get some way to use cubase/protools and good audio cards natively on linux I'll be with you.

I should thank you for making this thread. It reminded me to turn off automatic updates so they don't put their final patch into my XP to "fix" it in a way that makes me need an upgrade to get it working right again.

> Who's with me?

Way ahead of you. I have to use Microsoft's crap at work because some of my vendor's tools only work with IE... but as soon as that is fixed, I will once again be Windows free. My primary OS has been various Unix flavors (Solaris mainly) since 1990 and was DOS 2.1 before that. I never did jump on to the Windows bandwagan.

I don't think I have ever heard as much Microsoft hate in the past as I have from the Vista garbage. Even when Windows ME was destroying peoples computers, they just sort of shrugged like that was expected with Microsoft. The only group of people that I haven't heard complain about Vista is the recording industry. There are some serious usability flaws in the OS if the recording industry is happy.

man realy true that you need xp in order to use vista at all? sounds strange!
i got ubuntu running on my server, only negative thing so far is the update that made it all fall apart and i had to do a reinstall eventually. think it was the edgy-release. besides that it works well.

are the windows emulators any good for photoshop, illustrator, vegas and these programs? thats only thing that keeps me using xp on my other computer.

Come to think of it... this is a good place to ask:

To those of you who will be buying Vista, will you be doing as many who are familiar with microsoft do... wait 6 months after the release for microsoft to fix many of the bugs it will originally be fraught with?

Interesting thread.

To answer Konnrade, I'd wait a good 9 month to a year to buy it, if you plan to.  I remember an article that I read saying how most code monkey's who work on developing Windows actually use some distro of Linux to create the OS.

How sad is that

I'll definitely pay close attention.
I hope that Linux will be ready for me when I'm ready for Linux, if it were as simpleton-friendly as windows I'd be on Linux already.

And you think that will help?

Nope, it is for the upgrade. It used to be, when upgrading to XP from Win2K, that you could put in your original Win2K media to verify ownership of the previous version. That isn't good enough now. Instead, you actually have to install the previous version and register it with Microshit, then you can proceed to install Vista as an upgrade. A huge pain for those of us in the industry that have to do several hundred of these. What used to be a thirty second job now takes a few hours, per machine. (If your machine is already running the older version of the MS product, then this is no big deal.)
