WinXP home help please...

I'm hoping someone here knows how I can get around this. I was surfing the other morning (as I always do) and turned my pc off as usual. I talked to my gf at break and she said I only had 1 or 2 icons on my desktop, I said I would check it out when I got home. That was yesterday, when I got home and powered my pc on it went to a black screen and displayed the message that <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupted, please reinstall file. Well, I went round and round for a couple of hours trying to get into my hard drive to try to fix it w/o luck. Then I booted to the cd drive with the disk in and tried to use the recovery console (is asking me for the admin. password as no passwords are set) and finally did a total reinstall. I got to the desktop and immediately installed the systemdrivers, preparing to use "Get Back NTFS". Within 5 mins. I got a message that explorer encountered a prob and needed to close, and so it crashed again. I reinstalled again and immediately installed avast and scanned, clean. I got everything set up, was surfing this morning with no problems and ran Get Back for about 4 hrs. didn't even get my pics and stuff back So now I get the explorer error message again, my system crashes, and now I'm back to where I was when I got home from work yesterday>ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt. I know windows sux, but it's what I got Does anybody recognize this sort of problem? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Dude, thank you! I haven't googled or anything yet b/c I cannot gain access, I am on a friend's system right now. The link you provided is a great help! While checking my system event log I did see a keyboard error for yesterday (even though the keyboard is working properly and is being detected). I think this is gonna be the problem. I also see how to use the recovery console to write in the file, but I'm still confused on the admin password thing, there is no password I'll go try it now. Thanks a lot!

Sounds like a dying HDD. I know I've had something very similar happen to me also.
If you have an extra drive, try using that and see if you get the error again.

Yep. I managed to expand the file, on the next boot I got the same message with a different file. So I took my HD out and put in a different one, installed xp and I'm using it now. M$ says that if you recieve error messages repeatedly, the HD is dying. O well, I'm due for some new equipment anyway. Thank you for your help
