explorer help please
    #2289271 - 01/31/04 10:11 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

hi there.

i'm not very computer savvy, so i'll need a lot of help with this. i use XP and surf using explorer as my browser. since a few hours ago i've been unable to run explorer -

when i click it i get a box with "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience." and an offer to send an error report. i send it and get a 'more information' thing to click. this gives me the same message, then microsoft crash analysis opens in a browser window for a few seconds and closes itself.

i tried to reinstall explorer, but it says it can't as a newer version is installed. i can't find where to uninstall it from.

i am now online using 'MSN explorer' (?another browser) that i think i got onto from the start menu somehow. i tried the mydoom finding tool, and it said i wasn't infected.

can someone help me get Explorer up and running again?

:frown:

Reboot first  then try uninstalling all the IE patches that are installed under add/remove programs if the problem isn't fixed. Did you install any utilities for IE?

Most of the time when this happens a format and reinstall is necessary, but work around it as long as you can, it could be a temp thing.

thanks both, but still no good. what can i do next?

why can't i reinstall explorer from the internet? it tells me i have a more recent version installed so it can't help me. in the add/remove section it has a bunch of XP hotfixes, but i can't see any explorer patches.

thanks anno and tinman for the tips. thankfully not needed now:

first i found a way to change the registry keys so that i was able to reinstall explorer 6 even though the same version was onboard (this didn't work). then i downloaded some diagnostic thing that diagnosed 129 errors, and wanted me to buy it for a fix (forget that). then i removed some random XP hotfixes from the control panel (still no fix). finally i did a system restore to yesterday's settings (which appears to work).

i don't understand computers at all, but at least i have my shroomery friends to help me out

Same thing happened with my Outlook Express. One day it just would not open. Same error warnings. I tried to reinstall & everything else but to no avail. But looking back, it was a blessing in disguise. I started to use Moz Thunderbird as my email client - even though its a pre-release, it still kicks Outlook Express in the face.

Perhaps check out another browser for the time being...I bet after a few days you wont go back to IE. Click on my sig to download  Moz Firebird

Cool monkey btw
