reinstalling windows 98
    #4168412 - 05/12/05 09:01 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

So this morning my computer crashed and when I restarted it, I was prompted for a CD key (sigh, fuckin windows). After re-typing my windows CD key, windows started to load up. Explorer.exe being the first program to load, crashes (explorer has performed an illegal operation and will be gay and not run)  :badcomputer:

So im guessing by now im going to have to reinstall windows 98. My question for everyone is: Will reinstalling windows 98 (even though it's already on my computer) delete my existing files (i.e. songs, documents, movies, etc)?

The first person to correctly answer that gets a 5 shroom rating for assistance.

I must also add that absolutely nothing is running after explorer crashes. Just a blank desktop.

I dont understand "overlay".

My windows wont start at all, if I put the CD in and run setup from DOS would it just replace all the windows files? or would it create double of both? I only have like 800mb of space on my hard-drive left so I wouldn't be able to create any extra files.

Yes, as Poke said, it won't duplicate the entire Windows directory. It will merely overwrite system files. You sould do this, regain access to all the files you want and save them to some removable media, then reformat and reinstall. A "fresh" install is usually better than a "dirty" install (Reinstalling on top of another copy of Windows on your HD)

Oh I see. I'm in the same boat in a way. My CD burner is dead now and I'm fast running out of disc space.....

In addition to the options of reinstalling Windows on top of itself and formatting the drive and reinstalling, you also have a third option: a clean folder install of Windows. This basically involves renaming the C:\Windows folder to something else (c\:Winold, for instance), then running setup. Setup will simply install Windows to a clean folder and you'll retain all the files on your disk, inclyuding everything in the old Windows folder. Of course, then you'd have a clean registry so you'd have to reinstall all of your programs, but all of you rfiles will still be there. (Note, you don't have to rename the C:\Windows folder, you could just delete it, but it's generally a good idea to avoid deleting the folder until your fresh windows install is up and running.)
