hey guys
a friend of mine just got a new computer and i remember seeing a guide somewhere on the net about the steps to take on a new system before hooking it up to the internet... (beside the obvious antivirus blaba and firefox)... i've been digging through google for quite some time now and can't seem to find anything...
can anyone help me out with this? it would be greatly appreciated, as i also want to format and reinstall my own computer... thank you in advance!

oh come on! i'm not gonna talk my friend into starting to use linux... she's confused enough with the whole deal as it is... otherwise she wouldn't be telling me to set the whole deal up...
as for myself my next computer will definitely have linux on it... as of yet i am reluctant to install it... don't ask me why...

i don't know what kind of security software you need or have available until i know what operating system you're using. i'd assume windows xp, but i try not to do that...
the best antivirus is NOD32. it's not free, but there is a fix available that makes the 30 day trial think 30 days lasts 50 years. i use that on all the windows machines i use. you can get it using bit torrent pretty easily.
a software firewall might be a good idea. zonealarm is pretty popular. i think those are all pretty cheesy though.
the most important thing to do, in my understanding, is to turn off services you don't need so you don't have ports lying open when they don't need to be. this will give you extra security and performance. there are some guides on the net about tightening a windows box up by turning services off. i don't know which is best and you can google as well as i can, so i won't post anything specific. maybe someone else can.

Or just use a cheap router to connect to the internet. Hardware firewall FTW.

1. router 2. spyware & anti-virus 3 modify your services: http://web.archive.org/web/20041128084144/www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm 4. install firefox or opera as your default browser & avoid IE
