I'm actually happy with windows XP. I enjoy flaming microsoft, but XP is a good product(for me).

I don't think I'll switch to Vista for a while. I don't need my OS to look nice, it should be functional and as far as I know Vista isn't much more functional, or is it? I think I would use the windows classic theme anyway :smirk: I'm getting old and conservative haha.

Honestly, for the purposes that most businesses have computers for... I'd imagine windows 9x is perfectly adequate. Even if they are using XP at the moment, I can't imagine that Vista has enough additional utility to make it worth the cost of upgrading. Unless their business happens to require a feature which is noticeably improved in Vista, I simply don't see the marginal utility of an upgrade being worth the monetary expense.

My biggest qualm with Vista, personally, is the convoluted mass of interconnected monkey-wrenches they threw into the works in a futile atempt to protect intellectual property. It's not possible for the kind of approach that microsoft is taking to stand up against the collective ingenuity of pirates and hackers, so the features will unavoidably fail to deter them... yet it will remain in place nonetheless. It will be sitting there, getting in the way of honest users, while simultaneously failing to do the things it was supposed to do, the things that were the entire justification for those features in the first place.

Current generation DRM is simply bad in every way... and Microsoft has integrated a large amount of it in Vista.

My dad is responsible for the IT in a hospital. I asked him when he plans to switch to Vista and he started :lol:.

I've used Linux on and off but overall I'm staying with XP because there are certain programs written for Microsoft that can't be replaced. For example, although MATLAB can be used on Linux, not only is it a pain in the ass to install it also is not reliable. This is a big issue when you're depending on MATLAB to give you quick (relatively speaking) and accurate results. Also SPSS, AMPL, etc. all a pain in the ass to get to work or doesn't exist for Linux.

And what about WINE you ask? Yea... whatever.

There is a workaround to install the vista upgrade clean, without even having an XP key.

1. Install vista without the key as a 30-day trial.
2. Install again from within vista using the key, select "custom install" and do a clean install.
3. Activate.

I installed Kubuntu in VMware and I've been playing with it. Klibido seems like a great news client. It has most of the features of Newsleecher except Supersearch, but that's was Newzbin is for. Multithreaded downloads and automatic yEnc decoding work great, multiple server support is all there, it's solid. :smile:

But can anyone humor me and answer a newb question? How can you force an application to run in the background? I'm doing 'vmware-tools &' but it still pops up the configuration window. I didn't have this problem in Gentoo. Is it the newer version of VMware tools do you think? Or something Ubuntu-specific or what?

Edit: looks like I can use 'ksystraycmd --hidden vmware-toolbox' but is there a better way?

Does anybody know for certain how long MS plans to support XP? I heard from a reliable source that they were planning on ending all XP support within 1 to 1.5 years. He said they have already ended all development except for critical patches. The example he gave was DirectX 10 which will never work on anything less than Vista. MS is hoping that the game market along with no support will push Vista even though people don't want it. He also said that Microsoft is requiring hardware vendors to close source their device drivers and hardware specs if they want Vista to work with their hardware. A bit of back handed way to destroy open source OS projects.

Do you think the world would be better of with two or more major OS?

Or do you just want one free open source OS used by almost everyone? Or one commercial, but better than Microsoft?

The nature of open source ensures that there will never be just one open source OS. Someone will always hack it up and redistribute it again and again until they've created something incomparable to the original. And that's how it should be. I'd say the ideal OS would be a large selection of free *nixes like we have now, with most of them obeying sets of independent standards, like we almost have now. For instance, we in the nix world are all happily using standards like POSIX and X11. The obstacles in *nix's way are the standards that haven't been reached yet, like a standard package management scheme, or a standard desktop framework (Qt vs. GTK vs. other).

Standardize everything properly so that an application author can package it just ONCE to work for every system, and all the advantages that commercial OSes have had in the past disappear.

According to this article, full support is scheduled to end in 2009, with a 5 year "extended support" period. So they'd probably say 7 years, I'd say 2.

I wonder how this ties into their "Games For Windows" initiative. At first I thought it was great that they wanted to make gaming on a PC as simple as a console. I should have figured there was more to it. "I'm sorry but to certify your game it must support 64-bit CPUs and DirectX 10. Aw shucks, you mean your customers will need to upgrade to Vista? You know I have been genuinely happy using Windows for 10+ years. Sure it's not perfect, but it's a tool and it does what I need. I thought the antitrust lawsuit was BS and I was glad when it faded away. I guess you never really notice until you're affected, and then you have to scramble for an alternative. I hope other Windows users will learn from my mistake and start playing with Linux sooner rather than later.

You can buy OEM Vista Ultimate for only $200, but that's OEM. Other then that it is a little expensive, but I don't mind, how often do you buy a new version of Windows anyway?

Half Life 2, HL2: Ep1, and WoW run perfectly fine. I get 120fps min on Counter Strike Source and all hl2 games/mods. Those are pretty much the biggest titles in PC gaming and they go perfect for me.

I also believe Vista has the best UI design than I've ever seen in an OS. Better than OSX, that's my belief so don't take it too personally.

I'm a programmer, so I'm not ignorant to computer systems and the psychology behind UI design. Vista isn't so painfully simple that it feels like I'm working through a middle man, Vista allows me plenty of control and it feels like I have it unlike with a Mac. I go by how it 'feels,' and performs not just bias.

My system runs Vista with the Aero theme perfectly, one which could be considered mid-high - high range system.

I like it a lot, and will buy it. And screw the XP key.

I guess I am one of the few that is excited about vista. I waited on building my first PC for vista. I won't buy it until maybe late summer when the major bugs are worked out hopefully by then but I hope there are many improvements since XP. I really like the ready boost feature, where you can use a thumb flash drive as memory to boost your P.C's performance. Seems like a cheap alternative when using memory intense apps when compared to memory sticks. I would like to see more done on the directx10 and would really like to see DDR3 main stream before I blow a lot of $ on building a PC to last a good number of years and keep up with todays games. My company is somewhat in the tech field and we get a lot of serial keys for NOT FOR RESALE and I hope we get one for vista soon. I just got the Ecopy key and have been playing around with it.

even though the feature to add flash memory as main memory is cool, it couldnt be that good. The bandwidth between the processor and real RAM is soooooo much greater than a usb drive....
