air filters for terrarium

Hi guys

I'm not sure if this is a topic for Advanced or not but here goes.

I have a terrarium set up, housing about 6 cakes, on perlite flooring, with a thermostat that keeps the temperature between 75-78 degrees F. Twice a day I air the cakes.

Now, I'd like to set up an air filtering system so I can leave them alone for longer periods of time while I am away, and to minimize the risk of contamination. I have a few ideas but I'm not sure they're the best ways to do that. Any suggestions? How do you do it ?

Grab a small aquarium air pump. Grab two pint jars. Fill pint jars, one with dilute bleach, one with dilute hydrogen peroxide *bleach first*. Drill or punch two holes in the jar lids. Using airline tubing and silicone sealant, create a pressurized bubble system, with the air escaping the hydrogen peroxide chamber into the fruit chamber. This provides humid, sterile air flow which will help keep contaminants out by creating a positive pressure within the chamber.

EDIT: Use airstones if you find the bubbling too noisy.

Lun4e's method sounds good, you can add a filter to the line too...



They can be found at almost any brewing supply store for around $5. Probally a bad idea to use this by itself due to drying, but adding a jar like Lun4e suggested will help that problem.

Once a 'cake" is birthed,
or a bulk substrate is exposed to "fruiting" conditions.

"sterility" is no longer required.

Certainly, cleanliness should be maintained.
But, filtering FAE to any high degree, doesn't help.
I use a fully enclosed/sealed grow chamber.



I use a small squirrel cage fan for automated FAE.
(on a timer)

It creates POSITIVE pressure.

Under positive pressure, FAE is pushed out the drain hose.
On the bottom of the unit.

In warm months (gnat season).
I use an automotive engine filter.
Over the fresh air intake.
To keep out gnats.

An aquarium pump, or computer fan should suit FAE requirements.
In a terrarium.

How you install it.
Would depend on what the terrarium is made of.

I think one of the main reasons I haven't ever gotten around to it is because I'm afraid even once I found one I wouldn't be able to set it up :sad: You have to understand that I am the most unhandy person in the world,as a matter of fact I'm unhandy to the point of idiocy,I am not joking when I say that before I started this hobby I never made or fixed a thing and the only tool I had in the house was a hammer that I took from my grandpa so I could hang pictures on the wall when I moved here,you wouldn't happen to have a writeup or some kind of tek would you  :hehehe: ?? No joke I had trouble putting a locking doorknob on my grow area and I didn't need anything for that but a screwdriver:lol:
