please help terrarium question
    #1571863 - 05/23/03 12:44 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

My friend is about to bulid a terrarium 30" long 16"deep 26"high. He is doing it this size because its going to be inside of a Tv stand w" fake doors He wants to use perlite because of the space but should he use fans or a bubbler for air exchange. Also will perlite be enough to humidify it since it is so big or should he make 2 terrariums 13" high. He is going to be doing casings. Thank you

if your doing casing that should be more then enough humidity make sure you will be able to air it out though by fanning over top

Perlite will be fine for providing humidity. If it's going to be hard to manually fan out every day because it's in a TV stand then it would be wise to use some other form of gas exchange.

Just go down to the local hardware store and pick up a cheap squirl cage fan. Little itty bitty fan that will bolt right into the side of the box, can be installed with a togle swith or timer. It'll suck the air out of there fairly quickly for it's size.

thanks everybody, as for the squril fan what about contams, would building a small box around the fan and putting a filter help.  How about the air space it draws from, The terrarium is going to be inside of the bottom of the Tv stand hidden and there won't be alot of room around it  Thank agin!!

Have the fan on one side of the terrarium blowing outward and use a bubbler to inject air into the system through h20/h2o2 (sterile, filtered, humid air) or cut another hole on the opposite side of the terrarium and cover it with a HEPA filter. Honestly though, you pull the lid off a terrarium and fan it with room air if you're using a poor man's terrarium, so don't worry all that much about air borne contamination.
