homemade filters
    #393940 - 09/13/01 11:36 PM (22 years, 17 days ago)

hey there was wondering if anyone had any ideas for homemade air filters for a terrarium? i was thinking of doubling up some cofee filters and spraying them once a day with h202 mixed with h20. would this work or is there still to much of a risk of contamination cause i was only gonna use it on my grow chamber for air exchange. thanks alot all

actually, on a grow chamber, that should be okay, though my neighbor's cat doesn't use such tactics, collonized substrate is fairly resistant to contam untill it gets old.

Even on jars, I have no use for filters. Most contamination comes from the syringe, not the air. I presume most people are using common sense and not leaving mouldy loaves of bread around.

I think you can use coffee filters for this. I don't think you have to spray them. good luck!

coffee filters prolly wont work if you want to spray them everyday. (imagine them getting wet all day from the humidity of the terrarium, and then being sprayed with a bunch of water. the humid air would likely soak thru them, inviting contams to get naaaaasty in the standing wet filters)...

id think of a few other options and weigh them against a coffee filter-
1.) use the filtration disks now available... youd only need a few, or even the tiny ones they sell for plugging holes in spawn jars. http://www.micronmagick.com and http://www.mycosupply.com are 2 vendors they are available from. micron magick's seem pretty durable to me- ie they wont be falling apart. i think mycosupply's are a bit thicker, but i havent got to check them out yet personally so i dont know. mycosupply also has those tiny ones for spawn jars, but i know you can cut the micron magick ones with no problem. but, then again- getting them wet isnt a good idea, as mold can grow on them- so these i wouldnt spray with anything. but they might be sturdy enuf to withstand the humid outtake air of a terrarium- id email the vendors and ask them what they think.
2.) stuff the holes with polyfil. like you would for a spawn jar... old faithful.
3.) dont use anything at all. many people have holes drilled in their terrariums to let excess co2 out and dont cover the holes. esp. if yorue working with a constant/consistent flow of air- the positive pressure would push air out- lessening the chance of dirty air coming in.

in any case, the coffee filters may work. but i wouldnt spray them with anything. in fact, i wouldnt spray any filtration thing you use with anything- no use in it, may just increase contams.
