If you have a scientific supply store near you they might have filter disks, other than that I can think of any stores that carry them.

I already know about using tape as mentioned in the PF-Tek, paper towels seem risky even after being lysoled out then dried. Something that works just like the filter disc keeping moisture in contams and critters out.

You posted twice....so here we go again.
Safety and Supply stores.
Get respirator filter covers.
They are thin and look alot like the filter disc's that i have seen offered by the venders.
They come in several thickness's also.
Not sure if these would work....but i don't see why not.

The filter discs are basicaly TyvekTM from DuPont, so you should be able to take that instead.

I've got a huge roll of Tyvek. I could sterilise it and use it in lieu of filter disks? Is there a directional function of Tyvek, ie. face up/down?

Thanks Anno,

Joshua

I use banding aids. These particaular ones are water resistant, they do not let water get in and the filter (1mm thick) let breath both ways. They work like a charm, 1$ per box of 25 bands.

Ok, so these look to me like regular bandaids? i assume you use these to cover the holes in your jars?
whats your innoculation method? because i use rye grain, and use conlonized rye, or agar to colonize the substrate.
should i poke holes in the jar lids, and fit on one of your band aids?
what brand are these, and where does a person get them?

thanks.

I use different kinds of jars, for smaller jars with metal lid, i use them to cover the innoculation holes and poke thru them to innoculate. For bigger (specially grain) jars i make bigger holes (only 2 holes) and i use them only for air exchange as i innoculate grain with open lid, got to get a bigger needle. Also the bands are put in lids before PCing.
Well, this are "Tesa" band aids, they are sold in Europe but i think you'll find alikes where you live, here's a pic of the box.

Just to correct the brand name, they're not "Tesa" they are "Salvitas" bandaids, made in Sweeden.

A point of info... Tyvek is an air infiltration BARRIER. It is used as a house wrap during construction to PREVENT air infiltration. It allows moisture vapor to pass through it so your insulation does not get damp, therefore reducing the insulations "R" value. To put it simply, it will stop air from passing through, yet allow moisture to escape. No air, and loss of moisture. Does that sound good to any of you?

Do polyfill lids allow jars to colonize faster? Also, this is a stupid basic question, but if u put tape over ur holes before boiling, does that mean u can skip the aluminum foil. I thought the holes had to be open to let steam out? Thanks!!!

Visigoth, Letting the steam out of the jars is definately bad! Any moisture loss from the jar throws off the mix that you were so careful to get just right. If the lids are tight the change in pressure can burst the jar. So leaving the tape off releases the pressure, barely any steam. A slightly loosened lid can let the condensation dripping from the lid of the pot to enter the jar (like cracking a car window when it's raining like hell) again changing your "perfect mix". So if you leave the tape off you could tighten the lid. Or, leave the tape on and loosen the lid. Either way, use the foil. Just my thoughts. Peace
