WBS filtration help needed
    #4250538 -

first off i want to point out that i know how people usually do their gas filtration on their WBS jars: lids with holes in em, and polyfill taped over the holes. i say this to spare yourselves having to explain that to me.

onto my inquries

In the instance that i would use felt as my filtration medium, a good solid fabric, since the filtration medium is supposed to keep out contams, why couldnt i just screw a piece of felt on w/o a lid? wouldnt this keep the contams out and allow for max gas exchange?

i use alum foil as my lid so i dont have to guess where the hole is when its covered by a filtration medium. when i innoc, the hole is only as big as the needle. is this a big enough hole for the needed amount of gas exchange?

tell me the order of how the jar gets assembled: lid - PC - filter - innoc; lid - filter- PC - innoc; lid - pc - innoc - filter. this i need to know because it seems to me that if you PC'd with the filter on, the filter would hold water that could become a contam problem.

thx

Skip the felt & get some tyvek. Free at the post office.
Then put a square of it over the top of the jar.
Then a lid with a small hole or two in it.
If you just use a ring there will be too much gas exchange and
the grain might dry out.
Then the ring on top.
PC it.
After it cools innoc it.

Felt (and probably polyfil) would get wet, so perhaps foil over
the top if you use them.

well thanks for trying but you dont tape polyfill over the holes. Drill or punch a 1/4 inch hole in the very center of your jar lid, stuff it with polyfill, and put alum foil over that. U dont have to guess where the hole is....its in the very center of the lid. At 1/4 inch its hard to miss.

Also, a FOAF likes to use both polyfill (as described above) with a piece of tyvek underneath. It allows someone using grains to shake it halfway through colonizing. Polyfill alone can get a little messy when u shake the sub, so the smooth(er) tyvek emsures the polyfill doesnt wick up moisture from ur sub and possibly contam.

just my $.02

(edit) 1/2 inch may work better if u are having trouble finding the hole thru the aluminum

yeah, im gonna go on a filter material hunt tomorrow. my main inqury isnt so much what materials hold less water is it that what materials can heal the best when i plunge a syringe though it.

been using these boogers for a while now and haven't had the first contamination problem from the filter leaking in mold spores. Never. Just ball it up tightly and pull it through. I even use'em on my liquid cultures too.

After the pc run it's a bit moist, but dries almost instantly. Never had mold probs because of this type of filtration. You can use 2 holes lids as well. Just make sure the poly fill is tightly run through the holes. It's way better than tyvek IMO.
