Ok so i may have changed my mind already...On my way to work today I saw my neighbor outside... kinda a creepy guy who owns a farm right in the middle of our neighborhood... I asked him if i could get some old maure for my garden at home and he says he has a huge manure pile on the side of his barn that is several years old he said... I can go pick some up on sunday... Now for the question... He has horses so im figuring its mainly horse poo, but he also has some ducks and such... maybe another various farm animal... If that poo is mixed in with it, will that still work??? is "several" years too old??? How much should I get and what are the steps on getting this ready to spawn? Good link to a noob spawn horse poo tek.... Is horse manure good on its own or do u need to add more shit into the mix with it???


I hope this works... I might only spawn like 3 of the 5 to the h poo and keep the other 2 as cakes just to be safe.

The premium stuff the commercial industry uses is composed of alot of chicken manure. So you're safe with the duck crap I'd say.

Horse poo is like fine wine, older is better.

You get as much as you can carry home. Teks are available above under Mushroom Info>Grow Mushrooms>Bulk Substrates and other locations within reach of the search function.

Straight horse poo is one of the best substrates possible.

The easiest and least messiest way for me is to hydrate the poo, bake in an enclosed ovenware (I use aluminum roasting pans with foil wrapped tightly).

The garbage bag might break... double bag it to be safe. I use a 50LB grain bag I got at the beer brewery in the neighborhood.

I PM'd you Roadkills horse poo tek. He describes everything you need to know about getting and preparing the poo.

Don't get stuff that has the consistency of soil. Get full nuggets that have no smell to them. If they are covered in a white fungus it's a good sign, this is protein for the mushrooms.

Store the poo dried in a dark cool place and it should last many months maybe even years.

Actually it gets EVEN BETTER
Here is monstermitch's recipe for bulk substrates haven't tried it yet myself but I will soon an it looks awesome.

when i do it, it doesnt smell bad, to me some people dont like it and think it smells bad, i think it smells like a big pot of potting soil cooking

If you can shovel a bit into the pile until you hit a dark, black colored material, that's a rich compost that's great for a wide variety of mushrooms. Cubensis included. You'll see it, then take a handful of it and give it a sniffing. It kinda has an Earthy, sweet smell to it. Spungy in texture as well. Or you can simply snag the dry horse manure nuggets off the top of the pile that are light brown and weathered a bit. Either one of the 2 are fantastic bulk substrate materials, but I prefer the composted stuff myself.

If you choose to use the dry, weathered nuggets instead; definately take a looksy a bit deeper into the pile so you can see what i'm talking about so you know.

Or you might decide you don't want to go sticking your hands in hpoo, in which case there are other options. Check the sponsor links, Tennessee Stud has some great products, and there are a couple people on eBay selling dried & shredded hpoo for fairly cheap. For me, it saves the time and hassles of having to go dig thru someone else's pile of shit.

Came out with almost 8 ounces dry on the first flush with one of my prior grows, can beat that with a Louiville Slugger

Is making tea out of a colonized cake possible... there is vermiculite in it so i figure just eating it is a no go... Let me know of any special instructions for making cake tea...

Went from fruiting those cakes to considering spawning them to back to fruiting them as cakes then back to spawning and considering horse poo...now making cake tea?

LOL naww man don't make cake tea total waste IMO.

I'm just gonna say for this grow just fruit those puppies as cakes using an FC with perlite humidification and manual fanning...get to know the fungi then take some prints and start a new grow with those spores.

That's why I don't like the idea of spawning to shit. Also, I don't need 8 ounces of mushrooms. I could trip one HELL of a long time off of 8 ounces of mushrooms, though.

Maybe I'll think about horse poo spawn after all..

I recently set up a tropic aire similar to the way your showed yours in the post I just read. I was curious if you monitor the humidity and if you are able to acheive 95% or more? I just set it up and plugged it in today and after a couple of hours only had like 75%. I will probably end up wetting some perlite and putting that down at the bottom of the FC, which makes me think buying the tropic aire was a waste of money. Just thought Id ask how yours performs...
