Humidifier Reservoir Expansion! * 1
    #9020817 - 10/02/08 11:42 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Humidifier Reservoir Expansion-

Many of us are using cool-mist humidifiers in our fruiting chambers.  And I would bet just about everyone has come home after being gone for the weekend to find it had run empty and dried out the FC.  What we need is a humidifier that only needs filling once a week.  I’ve seen a few different methods out there and tried a few myself.  But I found this method to be so damn simple and effective that I have to share it.

Here is the contraption in all its glory

The operation is simple.  Gravity allows the water to flow down the fill tube until the water level reaches the end of the vent tube inside the humidifier.  Once the water gets sucked up into the vent tube the vacuum that is created inside will not allow the fill tube to continue filling the humidifier.  As the humidifier runs for a while eventually the vent tube is exposed again and the force of the water trying to drain out will suck the water out of the vent tube and the external reservoir will drain into the humidifier freely.  This process will repeat until the reservoir is empty.

Just pinch or put a small clamp on the fill tube and unscrew the cap to refill when necessary.

That’s all there is too it.  No electrical circuits or valves to fail the only fault I see is if the reservoir somehow is cracked and no longer holds a vacuum.  Worst case scenario the drip catcher in the bottom of your FC will fill up with 3 gallons of water.
I intend to place the humidifier directly into my FC on the bottom shelf and the reservoir on the one above it.  The hose lengths were cut accordingly.

I think we can all already see exactly what needs to be done to create this apparatus but a few more pics can’t hurt.

Materials

Take the pen apart and keep these parts

I cut about an inch of the smaller diameter pen pipe to make an adapter to attach my plastic hose to the larger pen pipe.

I like these sunbeam humidifiers.  The first one I bought still works after many many hours of operation. The flat ledge in the back was the perfect spot to drill two holes just big enough to fit the pipes in.  I used silicone to seal them in place.

Inside the humidifier you need to make sure the fill tube goes almost all the way to the bottom of the FC.  The vent tube should be just a little lower than the level you want to maintain.

I removed the valve from the water jug and used the rubber stopper to connect the tubes to the water tank.  You know one of those rubber stoppers you steal from science class in high school to make a bong out of a whiskey bottle :bong:

You need to make sure the end of the vent tube sits at the top of the water jug.  I slid it up inside of the handle of the water jug to hold it in place.

Simple enough don’t ya think??

Just thought I'd add in, buy some bacteriostatic water from walmart, it can be found in the pharmacy by the humidifiers, it will stop any baddies from growing in your cool-mist or the reservoir!  I've also noticed a general decrease of contaminations within my FC.

I use a 10 Gal. garbage can converted into a pressure tight sealed reservoir, and over multiple months have not cleaned the reservoir and it is still slime free!

They also carry a product that is to be used with tap water to remove minerals that will extend the life of your ultrasonic.  I feel both products have been well worth the investment.

For a fully enclosed gh with a coolmist piped in, one may find that adding one of these to the opposite end as the intake will seriously help reduce pressure buildup and strain on the poor weak coolmist motor, while also dramatically improving fae without cutting polyfill stuffed slits all over the damn thing.  (That looks suspicious :smirk:)

You had me at "two tubes".

Not exactly a quote, but an idea.

This deals with controlling the flow in such a simple way.

Interesting cause this is exactly what I am trying to do right now. Only thing is my humidifiers are a different style.. My thoughts were to drill a hole into the reservoirs of both my cool mist and my ultrasonic humidifiers, and run airline tubing from a 5 gallon bucket set above them so that it would feed both.  That way I could add my water with a little h202 right to the bucket and it would feed both humidifiers.  The only problem is I did not realize this would wreck the vacuum in the humidifier itself, and both humidifiers overflowed and leaked all over the place.  If I used a sealed reservoir do you think it would work for this style humidifier? Or how else is it possible to get this to work?? There has to be a way!

In the picture the extra line would be going to my ultrasonic, but i broke the connection so that I can try hooking it up to a sealed reservoir to see if it does not overflow.. I'll know more in 24 hrs when the seal is finished!

And of course if all else fails i'm just gonna give up on this system and make a diy humidifier system with a pond fogger, fan, and float valve.. but i'd really like to make this work before i give up and move on.

ps i just noticed the vent tube on the original post.. im guessing i'll probably have to add that once i use a sealed reservoir, granted it doesnt overflow

These sorts of devices depend on a partial vacuum being created in the
space above the water in the tank.

i.e. if air is allowed into the tank, from anywhere, then the water in
the tank will drain out and flood the area of the unit.

This extends to the tank that you attach to the unit.  Assuming that
you make the tubing air-tight where it leave the extra tank and enters
the unit's tank, then you will need to make sure that the extra tank
is air-tight as well.  Even then I wonder if there might be lag period
as the larger extra tank creates the back pressure to stop flow.

We have better fluid mechanics here abouts....lets see what the
consensus is.

Good luck,

JD

JD thanks for the input man! Yeah that's what I was figuring (about the lag in the vacuum thing).. I'm almost finished with the reservoir situation I described so we'll see what happens.. only thing is as I'm sure you know the silicone takes 24 hrs to set so i've had to go in steps. I'm not in any rush though.  I'm not gonna lie I gotta little sloppy trying to silicone the air vent tube to the top-inside of a 4 gal water jug like m-420 did in the original post.. either way i'll see some results on this in just a little bit. Again thanks for the reply!!!

Check this out. It works (NOT)
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17811040#17811040

The set up was not effective. Refer to the post below for an updated technique that is working well.

I would say that would lead to too much head pressure
I'd leave the bucket level put a top on it too...
My humidifier makes enough vacuum to suck the water out as long as u have another airline I put a chk valve in it

I was too exuberant and hasty with qualifying my set up. It seemed to work at first, then I noticed that it did not allow adequate delivery. I have found another method that does appear to work. I sealed the top hole on the humidifier tank, and drilled a new one near the bottom. A larger external reservoir was then attached and positioned so that the top water level was only six inches above the valve in the humidifier tank. This was tested at several height variations. If placed any higher than the current position, the humidifier would overflow.
I have recognized a substantial draw from the reservoir while the humidifier tank seems to remain static. The rate of water consumption is more volumetric than with my previous technique. Humidity is now at the desired level.

I apologize for posting a technique that was not fully tested.

:super: I cant believe how simple this is. I have been overthinking this in my head for weeks trying to find a way to hook a 5gallon up outside my GH. This is amazing! and I will be using it as of tomorrow lol! Im so excited to be able to keep my humidifier on all day so i can get some more FAE going. Couldnt do that before bc I would have to fill my res every few hours :frown:...Ive been searching for this thread forever and just stumbled upon it so hopefully the bump will help someone else as well!!

I did this with a 5 gallon bucket and instead of suckin air through the vent tube once the water gets high enough it starts to suck water up and the 5 gallon starts caving in under negative pressure. The res continues to overflow though....any suggestions?

There seems to be no doubt but that what is required
is a rigid vessel, connected by a rigid connector, with
zero air leaks.

Anything else will lead to an overflow.

...and, for the record, anyone using a humidifier should
probably position a tub next to the GH so that the humidifier
can sit inside it while being connected to the GH.

I have found that for no reason that I can yet explain that my
Kaz (classic impellor type) is losing its water.  I pump out
my container when I pump out the GH's tub.

Good luck,

JD

Yeah I learned that the hard way, I definitely have no air leaks as my 5 gallon is now triangular lol...I thought it would be rigid enough but I guess not :/ looks like ill just get a glass jar and fit a cap onto it.
