Is it really necesary to soak the perlite with h2o2. I think that is one thing that can be left. When h2o2 is added to the enviroment doesn't that result in blotches on the caps and brown streaks on the stems??? We dont want to be hurting are shrooms.

Have you estimated the price?

Oh by the way your setup looks pretty good.

The only improvement that I would suggest is to have a clear lid and not need all of the wireing and power adapter and tube for the built in light.

Just turn your closet light on...

Have the power cords from the bubbler and the submersible heating tube running out and that's it... Seems to be less hassle I guess.

youre giving me some ideas!!! i aint got no money though!!! one thing that i fing important while growing is that you need some space for more shrooms!!!! my ten gallon aquarium only fit four of my casing trays, and thats only 8 cakes!!! now that im growing again i am planning on making 24!!! anyone now a casing tray size that will fit 6 cakes???? and why dont you just put the light outside of that thing??? ohh ya, and hot glue never seemed to stick very well to plastic.

Great Design! You da man with illustrator...

I have a few comments:

1. Are you using the perlite for rehydration of the cakes? Or is it to raise humidity in the chamber? Perlite I have found tend to makes cakes soggy if they are placed directly on it...for this reason, I would instead use some sort of circular plastic grate (egg crate? or whatever it's called, that light clear plastic shit with waffle type holes...) and place cakes or cased trays on top of that. If the goal is rehydration, than maybe you could take a little more inspiration from Mcman and use a layer of geolite instead on top of the perlite, then the cake drinks as much as it wants without soggyness...another alternative would be to put the perlite in a stocking (yes, a stocking) and place that on the bottom...makes cleanup and replacement of yucky perlite an absolute breeze. (Mad credit to ripper for this idea...see post from a few years ago)

2. How to regulate temperature? The submersible heater within the perlite has nothing to act as a buffer...ie if you turn it up to high (and those things are a bitch to control) you could fry your cake...actually, i have a feeling that the floro light may provide heat in that small and environment as is...

Keep up the good work!

Hey Jared, what is the purpose of putting the fish tank heater into the perlite?

Well Jared this post got me thinking hard. I have always believed in DIY so I tried constructing one of your pods as cheaply as possible. Here's what I got:

The design is basically the same, but simplified. The cost was lower, because I left out the light and heater parts (and didn't need a DC adaptor). For vibration control I put a 2" piece of foam in the bottom and then another one on top of the air pump. This works great, and is much easier than constructing shocks for the pump. :) The air is also filtered through the foam this way, but I don't know if that provides any real benefit. You were right about the hot glue, it sticks like a bastard. I didn't use plexiglass because i found a piece of plastic laying around the house that did the job.

Costs:

1 5 Gal Bucket: $6
Foam: $4
Air Pump and Hose: $18
Timer: $15

How I did it:

I first took the bucket and drilled about 10 holes in the side for fresh air. I then made a hole for the cord of the air pump. I decided to just plug the timer into the wall instead of keeping it in the bucket (I figured this would allow me more configurability).

The foam was cut into circles using scissors and shoved in the bottom tightly. The pump's cord was fed through the hole and the air hose was attached. I drilled a small hole in the plastic cover and sealed the space between the hose and the hole with glue. I then glued the plastic down firmly. This design also eliminates the need for struts since the foam provides enough support already.

I haven't tried the pod yet but FOAF has some cakes germinating so I will post back with the results later.

Okay, I have a question about the first pod. ;) First off it looks really well thought out, but I just wanted to know how you are supposed to get to the timer to change it abit now and then? Does the section above or below it lift up?

Jared:
Just a thought. I know you want it to be concealable, but what about making it a bit larger. The only problem I find with the 5 gal bucket is its size (which might work for small rooms). But what about using a trash can, or a small 25 gal trash can. This would still be small enough to be concealable (closet), but would offer more space for more cakes. This is giving me great Ideas. Thanks Jared.

Jared, you said you wanted it to fit in a box, but with the air intakes and co2 exaust on the bottom, wouldn't the co2 end up being suck back in if contained in too small an area?

I guess I must have mis-interpreted the function of the timer. I thought the timer was being used to control the lighting of the terrarium.

Im sure you are thinking of geo-lite. It's volcanic rock, imported from Germany I think.

goes anyone know how to get it , sites about it , or teks on using it . i think by choice of top notch growers seems to be the best system . i myself know nothing about it at all whic is why i was wondering. also if it is the best then why couldnt it be used in this pod system, or other highly organized growing pods ?? please share any and all info . i think this would be an awesome addition to this pod chamber and am looking for some feed back.thx

Jared:

Here is my reasoning for having the air pump at the top: Air is heavier than Co2 so if the oxygen is coming from up high then either the Co2 will be pushed up away from the cakes or out the exhaust hole. I use a timer for my air pump so it is only on for 30 minutes and then goes off for 30 minutes. This way the air doesn't dry out too much. The perlite + spraying keeps the pod humid enough for me.

Anyhoo, check out my progress @ this thread:

Actually, I'm pretty sure CO2 is heavier. Whenever I've seen a mj grower with a CO2 setup, the tubes are always above the plants so when the gas is realeased it 'falls' down onto the plants. The exhaust hole for CO2 should be right above the perlite.

First, I want to say this is a very impressive post, are you an engineer?

I ran across some info about Aeration on a home brewing supply websight, you might look at integrating some of the equipment listed...

of course CO2 is heavier than O2... Come on... both have 2 oxygen atoms, but one also has a carbon... making it heavier

If one were to use perlite you could suspend the pf cakes above it with the grill from a small round homecooker. Like a small weber. For a garbage can you could get it from a larger weber. I have both. I may give that a try.......
