This is what gets me . You're casing with the same thing as your sub , just with more verm . Does that mean I can case my poo with a 70/30 verm. poo mix ? Same theory and principle . :confused:lol .

I've always recommended peat/verm for casing.  It's just that so many people are 'set' on using coir, that I grew tired of always saying it sucks as a casing, rather than a substrate.  If it's mixed 60/40 or 70/30 verm-coir it will work, although not as well as a non-nutritious casing such as peat will.

For those of you who were around then, I was the first person to say coir is a substrate material and not well suited for casing unless massively diluted with vermiculite. Until then, everybody seemed to repeat the lie that coir has no 'nutes'. In fact, saying that coir is better suited as a substrate than a casing material led to me getting banned from one of the other mushroom boards for being on a 'jihad' against coir and popcorn spawn.

I actually have a huge block of it so I broke off what I thought was one brick, but apparently it was well under. I added a gallon of water to it and there was just so much excess water.

So I strained it all after pasteurizing it.

I'm a bit worried mine is too wet, but I think it's alright.

Adjust to field capacity, then add spawn.

RR what would u consider field capacity for coir? soft squeeze for drops? hard squeeze? just so it's not dripping when you pick it up?

thanks

I adjusted to what I thought was field capacity before I added my spawn. That's why I used the strainer. Not quite sure if I actually got enough water out, though.

I did sneak a peek and things do seem to be colonizing.

I believe I may have made the holes in my monotub a bit too large though.

I'm about to build another tub which I'm sure will be better built than the one I'm working with now.

I hooope everything I've done works out, but if it doesn't I'll just try, try, try again. It's all a learning experience, I suppose.

Hehe another question for ya RR(or any of ya experienced mono-tub guys)

ATM my tub has no holes cut in it for gas exchange. It's a sterilite tub with the dual lock handle things. I have a blanket over the entire tub, and a suitcase full of clothes on top of that. should i cut a few holes in the tub(stuffed with poly) for gas exchange. i was under the impression that there wasn't a need for the holes(at least not when colonizing). Am i suffocating the myc?

Prim:

I'm obviously no expert with the mono-tub, but you are going to need to put those holes in. 4 on each side, 8 holes total. 4 holes directly above the substrate, and 4 holes at the top. I believe people normally drill those before they begin colonizing so that they don't have to make a mess after their substrate is colonized and ready to fruit.

Yep, I remember those posts. I was one of the diehard coir users for casing. When I find something that works, I stick with it . I got pretty good at achieving even pinsets with coir. I recently attempted my first peat/verm casing and it was less than successful. Peat requires a longer post casing incubation period than coir, because coir colonizes so aggressively. I fruited my first peat casing a few days too early, and while I got a good over all yield, the pinset sucked. Back to the drawing board.

I define field capacity as when you pick up a handfull of material, no water drips out. If you squeeze gently, a few drops will slip out, and if you squeeze forcefully, a small drizzle/stream will run out.

thanks RR. my coir was just a bit under field capacity then.

Also i went ahead and made some holes for gas exchange(stuffed /w poly. The tek i was following tub wise was a "bulk neglect" type tek that i read about on the nook. The tek said he didnt have any holes in his tub. i figured the sub was getting enough gas exchange through the lid, since those tubs usually are not 100% air tight. Either way ill know if it was necassary if it suddenly takes off in the next few days.

Also those pics are still comin etam. my GF went to see some crappy emo band tonight with some friends and i forgot to get camera...again. I'll take em late this evening.

i apologize in advance the pic quality isn't great. It's hard to get a decent pic through a bunch of condensation. It's even harder to get a pic through plastic wrap.

This is the best one i could get. Also had to edit the exposure of the pic which made it a bit blurry. But it's good enough so you can get an idea. This is the mono-tub. was impossible to get a decent pic of the pail, it's lookin pretty similar tho, a tiny bit less colonized.

I'd guesstimate that over all(above and below surface of sub) it's about 50-65 percent colonized. Hopefully the holes will speed it up..it kinda stalled a bit for the last day or two.

Yeah, hopefully those holes will get your colonization going again.

I seem to be at about 20-25% colonization right now. It makes sense, because it was a bit cold in my room for the first couple days. So far so good.
