verm/coir casing on coir substrate?
    #6233880 -

In my monotub, I'm using coco coir as my bulk substrate. Is there anything wrong with casing that with the 60/40 verm/coir casing tek?

I think it would be fine, it just seems... off or something to case with the same material as your substrate.

From what I have been reading for the past 4 hours verm/coir can be used to case just fine but it I guess the coir can cause overlay issues and make an uneven pinset. For the best results you want verm/peat moss. I guess it has less overlay issues because it doesnt have as many nutrients so the mycelium doesnt try to colonize it as easily and use it as a substrate material. Also you might want to add some oyster shell flour to balance out the PH. Linky!

Might I ask though, are you using WBS to spawn with or how are you going about colonizing the coir?

Oh yah I forgot ur supposed to add like blood meal or coffee grindings or something with nitrogren to the substrate (coir!!) because the coir is low in N and needs it for potency! Thx tahoe for the reminder.

wow...timing is everything....I have also just been reading on using coir as a substrate....and it has been mentioned that coir as a substrate does not need casing...and I was going to go with crumbling a couple of cakes, mixing with coir (and some coffee for N)1:2 and then incubating again before putting in the FC....any thoughts?

Thanks for the replies.

I'm using 6 equadorian rice cakes as my spawn. I broke them up into chunks with my hands and mixed them throughout the coco coir.

I'm actually doing my first monotub grow now. This is the first time I've ventured beyond the PF tek, so I'm both excited and nervous.

I haven't read anything about coir not needing a casing, but I did read in a monotub tek that you don't necessarily have to case your substrate. I plan on doing it anyway, though.

I'm thinking I should use the verm/peat moss casing...

Any thoughts?

hey man, thanks for the reply. I don't have any exp. with monotub.

I understand that for coir, you can case or not - but I expect that as with most subjects - there is room for debate. My take on things is casing is to provide moisture and microclimate for myc growth, and in the case of coir, it has a lot of moisture retention capacity, so if mixed properly would not need a casing, but that said, it doesn't interfere to have one either.

I just finished crumbling my cakes, and mixed with coir, and then put a very thin layer of coir over top. My first time with substrate so guess we'll see what happens.

coir/verm is allright.

Casing is not required with cubes, but there is no doubt that pinsets and eventual yield will be much better with a properly made and maintained casing layer. I prefer peat/verm, but verm/coir also works, but be sure to use considerably more verm than coir. 60/40 is ok, as is 70/30 verm-coir. Don't forget the gypsum. It increases yields considerably and is well worth the effort to find. Lime to an initial Ph of 8.

I'm on this band wagon as well.  Got 2 mono-tubs of coir sub colonizing atm.  It seems to have slowed a bit. i think i might need to provide just a bit of gas exchange.  i don't think it's getting much/any ATM.  Thinking about drilling a couple holes in my bin and covering /w micropore tape.

Think about the only difference is i didn't add and additives for nitrogen.  I've been reading alot of mixed opinions about using the coffee grounds.  Also i didn't want to have to worry about the PH.  Also i believe RR has said several times that uncomposted sources of nitrogen cannot be used by mushroom myc.  Only thing i added besides the coir was just a little bit of Calcium Carbonate.  Also i dont plan to case.  for my first go i'm keeping to the KISS method.

Good luck to us all   We'll have to compare notes. hehe

Once again, thanks for the responses!

I'm going to be going with a peat/verm casing with a dash of gypsum and lime, as RR suggested.

Prim: Keep me updated with what happens with your tubs, and we'll continue to compare notes. I'd like that; I think it would be quite beneficial to us both.

will do. how long has it been since u spawned? I'm at about 4 days. The surface has large chunks of myc all over it. it's probabally about 70% covered.

I actually spawned last night. It's been about 18 hours.

I'm afraid to peek for a few days. Incredibly anxious though, its so hard not to peek.

I hope everything looks good in a few days...

This is what gets me . You're casing with the same thing as your sub , just with more verm . Does that mean I can case my poo with a 70/30 verm. poo mix ? Same theory and principle . :confused:lol .

Yeah, that was my original concern.  Casing my coir substrate with... coir.  I never got a definitive answer so that's why I decided to go the verm/peat moss route.  I still have a few days before I even know if I have viable myc to case to figure it out though, so we'll see.

Prim: what coir tek did you use for your substrate?

Re: verm/coir casing on coir substrate? [Re: etam]

pretty much followed oatman's "tek".  i just used straight coir, no additives(well i did toss in a tablespoon or so of calcium carbonate as well.)  My ratios were about 1 to 3.5 or so.  Mixed it all up good, then gave it a frosting layer on top.  I'll post some pics of my 2nd "monotub" tomorrow.  It's just a pail covered with plastic wrap.  It isn't colonizing as well as the real mono tub tho.  It was just a after thought.  had some coir left over and some spawn that was somewhat questionable.  hehe only half the coir in the pail is even pasteurized.  Though it is colonizing.  I wont be overly hurt if i lose that one.

These were kinda just experiments anyway, so we'll see.  When i do it again i will prolly do 1 with coffee grounds and one without.  Also i will prolly hydrate my coir a bit more(it's a little on the dry side ATM i think.)

I would post pics of the other one but it's not really an option since i don't want to remove the lid before it's fully colonized.

Also the clear plastic bins are really convenient.

I've got some Hawaiian cakes that are done colonizing... I believe I'll pick up a clear bin tomorrow and make another monotub.

I look forward to seeing the pics!

Will post em tonight. My GF has the camera ATM. Also how much water did you use to hydrate your coir? I used 1 gallon to 1 brick. Like i said it seemed a bit on the dry side. i had to give it a healthy squeeze to get it to drip a couple of drops of water.
