When I first read that statement, I interpreted it to be referring to Bush. Even with his fumble over the words, his statement can still be interpreted that way.

He's done more to agitate them and marginalize the moderates in Islam, He stirs up the ants nest and cant figure out why he keeps getting bitten.

Yeah, I too thought he was referring to Bush. It wouldn't make sense otherwise- Kerry's a veteran, and a politician 7 days before midterm elections. He obviously wasn't trying to kick his own party in the balls, call himself stupid for joining the army, all in one sentence.

Exactly, Bush invading the Mid-East is like a black guy robbing a liquor store in a white suburb wearing baggy jeans and a wife beater with cocaine all up on the rim of his nose. Just reinforcing stereotypes, and confirming the narrow-minded beliefs of our enemies.

Before these wars, the Muslim extremists had very little support, and everytime they tried to kickstart a revolution by bombing shit, everyone got pissed off at them for the senseless violence. Now they have an enemy of mythic proportions to legitimize their hatred.

This has nothing to do with "cut and run" or "appeasing the enemy". It's about not throwing fuel on the fire. The claim that Saddam harbored al-Qaeda is bullshit and we all know it. They were bitter enemies! Saddam kept them out of Iraq by ruling with an iron (and murderous) fist. Yet we hear all these lies about Saddam throwing "al-Qaeda parties" from people like Anne Coulter.

you know who WAS "throwing al-Qaeda parties"? The CIA! They funded and trained them in afghanistan, and even gave them their name! You know where the term 'al-Qaeda' comes from? It means "the base". That's what they called the CIA camp where they trained the Mujahadeen, and it was the name of their file for this group of terrorists (or as Regan called them at the time, Freedom Fighters). Even bin-Laden himself admits that he didn't start using the name until the Americans created it for him.

Our government manufactured this enemy, and now they want to steal our freedoms to "defend" us against it....

in my opinion it was just a botched joke. think about it, kerry was in the military (he enlisted, wasnt drafted) and fought in a war that strongly resembles Iraq(vietnam). He probably could have "botched" the same joke 35 years ago, and it would still have been relevent, as long as you trade out "bush" for "nixon" or whoever was in charge back then.

Also he strongly banks on military record as a politician. What possible sense would it make for him to insult his own background?

as for the apology, i think it's kinda funny how he said people might have misinterpreted what he said. i guess he is just borrowing a page from the pope.

A botched joke doesn't make sense because Bush had a higher GPA than Kerry in school. The full quote is..
